Canisius College was included in a Buffalo News feature about the WNY Prosperity Fellowship, which supports student leaders while encouraging them to stay in Buffalo. Mary Rockwell, director of the New Buffalo Institute, oversees the fellowship program at Canisius. Beginning today, a new feature added to The Dome enables readers to save upcoming, on-campus events of interest to their digital calendars.
When and wherever relevant, editors of The Dome will include a link at the end of each post that enables readers to “add this event” to their calendars.
When you click the link, a series of options for various digital calendars will appear. Most options either email you a calendar invite or download a file that your email/calendar software can open as the event.

The Department of Political Science invites the campus community to a panel discussion on Thursday, September 8 titled “Teaching 9/11 and Sensitive Topics.” The event will be moderated by Shyam Sriram, PhD, a new assistant professor in the department. The panel includes several Canisius educators.

More than 150-plus employees and students gathered in the newly-renovated Economou Dining Hall on Wednesday, August 17 for the 5th Annual Employee Appreciation Lunch.
Spencer Liechty, the new director of Campus Ministry, was introduced and led the group in prayer. President Steve Stoute also received a warm welcome and expressed his gratitude for everyone’s hard work and dedication to the college. President Stoute added that he looks forward to more conversations with members of our campus community in the weeks and months ahead, as we work together to establish a new vision and strategy for Canisius.
Beginning the week of August 29, The Dome will return to its regular publication schedule of three times per week (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays).Submissions must be received no later than 2:00 p.m. on the day prior to publication. The Undergraduate Admissions staff will be welcoming prospective students and families to campus at two Fall Open Houses: Sunday, October 16 and Saturday, November 12.
Rev. John J. Ryan, SJ, former House Confessor to the Canisius College and High School Jesuit community, passed on away on august 5, at Murray-Weigel Hall.
Father Ryan came to the college in 1999 to assist in the Campus Ministry Office and with freshman advisement. After a brief stint as associate pastor of St. Ann’s Church (2002-2003), Father Ryan moved back to the Canisius Jesuit community and served as Chaplain to Alumni and Parents at Canisius High School (2003-2012).
The Buffalo Board of Education awarded the Academic Talent Search program $111,292 to provide extended learning services to the Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts school.
The mission of the Talent Search program at Canisius is to assist underrepresented youth with opportunities in educational, social and career support services, and co-curricular and cultural enrichment experiences that will heighten the possibility of them enrolling at post-secondary institutions.

Each year, students in Canisius’ Academic Talent Search (ATS) program volunteer at the Jim Horne Golf Tournament during the Earn While You Learn summer program. The students take golf lessons (sponsored by Horne’s foundation), two times each week, during the six-week summer program, during which time they learn the fundamentals of golf and the life lessons it teaches. One ATS student, Leandria Lias (a junior at BAVPA), started with us last year. She continued to receive lessons from Horne and was able to participate in the tournament this year.

In the latest episode of WBFO’s “Buffalo, What’s Next?,” Brigid Jaipaul-Valenza welcomed Wil Green, regional office director for the NYS Network for Youth Success and director of the Canisius College Center for Urban Education, to talk about racism, youth and education.
Dave Debo is joined by alumna Sydnie Perkins ’16, MS ’20, vice president of the Board of Directors of St. Luke’s Mission of Mercy, to share her experiences growing up in one of Buffalo’s poorest neighborhoods.
This new portal will provide a one stop shop for student engagement on campus! Student groups and campus offices can advertise their events on the portal for the campus community. In addition, we are proud to announce an involvement point system! Students will earn involvement points by checking in at various events across campus. These points can then be redeemed for prizes such as tickets to Sheas, gift cards, Canisius swag, and more!

Aimee Larson, director of the Physician Assistant Studies program, served as a panelist in Business First’s recent roundtable discussion titled “The Future of Healthcare: Education.” Larson was one of three panelists from area institutions who addressed how colleges are educating students to practice in an ever-changing and ever-challenging field. Eleven Canisius College students are recipients of a 2022-23 Western New York Prosperity Fellowship. Generously supported by the Prentice Family Foundation, Western New York Prosperity Fellowships assist undergraduate and graduate students who have an entrepreneurial drive and want to make a difference in Western New York. The fellowship program identifies the most promising talent in Western New York and immerses them in a robust educational and professional development program with the goal of developing economic leaders within the community. In addition, the fellowship program combines financial assistance in the form of scholarships with paid, credit-bearing internships to assist fellows in acquiring both academic and practical experiences in their intended professions.

Demolition work on the Science Hall parking garage is moving swiftly. Here’s the scene from late last week.
The college is replacing the 70-year old ramp with a surface parking lot to better accommodate the campus community. When complete, the parking area will be well lit, provide areas of green space and integrate pedestrian and bicycle-friendly design elements.
