Canisius’ “Kittens on Campus” had a bit of a viral moment on Thursday, April 21, when the felines showed off their latest ‘trick’ just in time for National High Five Day. Here you see kittens Willow and Pheobe high-fiving their trainers.

The exercise is part of a larger animal learning lab class being taught by Maura Tyrrell, PhD, experiential learning coordinator for the Animal Behavior, Ecology and Conservation (ABEC) program.

In cooperation with the SPCA of Erie County, Canisius has welcomed five kittens to the Margaret L. Wendt Animal Behavior Lab in Science Hall. During their time on campus, the kittens are learning to walk into a carrier on their own and complete a small agility course, among other things. The training is intended to make the kittens attractive adoption candidates and encourages positive relationships with humans that will help kittens transition to their new families.

The kittens will be on campus until May 5, and will then be available for adoption.  If you are interested in adopting a kitten, please contact Dr. Tyrrell at tyrrell3@canisius.edu.
