Faculty and Staff Development Opportunities in March

In the month of March, the Center for Online Learning & Innovation (COLI) will offer a number of opportunities for faculty and staff to learn new things for teaching, research and administrative work.  More opportunities are added each week!

UPDATE! After March 6th, all workshops are called simply “Preparedness Workshops.”  At those, we will discuss a variety of basics for preparing your classes to move online in case our campus classrooms are no longer available.  Since anything we cover is useful for augmenting face-to-face courses generally, these workshops are a special opportunity to learn new digital teaching skills!

See the list of workshops, meetups and other events on our events calendar. Be sure to check back as additional activities are added!

P/HETE Majors Assess Childhood Fitness

The Canisius Physical and Health Education/Teacher Education (P/HETE) program hosted students from Stanley Makowski Buffalo Public School (BPS) No. 99 on Tuesday, March 3 at the Koessler Athletic Center.  Teacher candidates from Dr. Clancy Seymour’s Assessment in PE (PED 371/PEG 571) course collaborated with Tony Lafornara ᾽88 and Ashley Caputa MS ’07, MS’10, to assess fourth grade student fitness levels using several different methods. With more than 100 students in attendance, the experience was enjoyable for fourth graders and allowed P/HETE majors to conduct research while cultivating local BPS partnerships. In addition, teacher candidates are provided the opportunity to analyze pre- and post-test data and administer fitness assessments in an authentic environment.

HEOP Celebrates its 50th Anniversary

Canisius College was one of the first private institutions to receive funding from the New York State Education Department to support the creation of the Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP). HEOP is designed to support students who have the potential to be successful in college but due to academic and economic circumstances, would not be able to pursue a college education. The HEOP program became a model for access programs across the country and significantly increased the numbers of Black and Latinx students attending colleges and universities.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the college’s participation in the Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program, Canisius will host a reception on Wednesday, April 15. The event is sponsored by the Division of Academic Affairs, Canisius Opportunity Programs for Education, the Office of Diversity & Inclusion and the HEOP Student Organization.

The celebration will recognize the first graduating class of 1973, which consisted of six students: George Benson, Amanda Cordero, Dorothy Cordelius, Michael Norwood, George Robinson and Dwight Tate.

In addition, Canisius will honor HEOP graduates: George Robinson ’73, Carolyn Billingslea ‘75, the Honorable Kevin Carter ‘86, Paula Prince ’91 and Aimiamia Amadasu-McCray ’03.

To date, there are more than 44,000 HEOP graduates across New York State including 400 graduates from Canisius College.
