The Canisius Physical and Health Education/Teacher Education (P/HETE) program hosted students from Stanley Makowski Buffalo Public School (BPS) No. 99 on Tuesday, October 8 at the Koessler Athletic Center. Alongside the assistance of Kristin Finn, PhD, professor of teacher education, and her students, P/HETE majors from assistant professor of kinesiology Clancy Seymour’s classes collaborated with Tony Lafornara ᾽88 and Ashley Caputa MS ’07, MS ’10 to assess fourth grade student fitness levels using several different methods. With more than 120 students in attendance, the experience was enjoyable for the fourth graders and allowed teacher education programs to conduct research while cultivating local BPS partnerships. In addition, teacher candidates are provided the opportunity to analyze pre- and post-test data and conduct fitness assessments in an authentic environment.

A special thanks to the entire women’s basketball program who surprised the 4th graders with a small warm-up and team picture following the event.
