It is with great sadness that I inform the Canisius College community that Dr. Linda Volonino, professor of information systems in the Richard J. Wehle School of Business, passed away on Sunday, December 20 from complications of a stroke she suffered on campus earlier this month. She was 63.
Dr. Volonino joined the Canisius faculty in 1986 and taught undergraduate and graduate coursework in telecommunications, information systems and data mining. She also established coursework in computer forensics and cyber security. Dr. Volonino authored several books on computer forensics including Computer Forensics for Dummies (2008) which she co-authored with Reynaldo Anzaldua of South Texas College; e-Discovery for Dummies (2009), which she co-authored with Ian Redpath, JD, chair of the Accounting Department at Canisius; and Information Technology for Management: Digital Strategies for Insight, Action and Sustainable Performance (10th edition – 2013), which she co-authored with Gregory R. Wood, PhD, associate dean of the Wehle School of Business, and Efraim Turban, a visiting scholar at the Pacific Institute for Information System Management, University of Hawaii.
Outside of Canisius, Volonino shared her expertise with local and national law enforcement and government agencies, educating investigators on how to use computer forensics as a valuable criminal justice tool and also how to combat computer crime.
Volonino earned a BS in psychology from Mercy College and an MBA in management information systems and management science from the State University of New York at Buffalo, where she also received a PhD in management information systems, with minors in management science and managerial economics.
Dr. Volonino is survived by her mother, Dorothy, and two sons, Charles and Richard.
A memorial Mass for Dr. Volonino will be held on Saturday, December 26 at 11 a.m. at St John Gualbert Church, 83 Gualbert Avenue in Cheektowaga.
An on-campus memorial Mass will be held in Christ the King Chapel when the spring semester resumes. Campus Ministry will inform the community of the date and time as soon as possible.
Requiescat in pace.
