The All-College Honors Program will hold its end-of-the-semester thesis defense week starting today, November 30 until Friday, December 4. During the defense week, the honors students explain and defend their research and creative writing papers. The student names, thesis titles, locations and times of the 45-minute sessions can be seen here.
All are welcome to attend.

David W. Darrow, PhD, a candidate for dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, will be visiting Canisius on Tuesday, December 1 and Wednesday, December 2.
Faculty and staff are invited to attend Darrow’s open forum scheduled for Tuesday, December 1 from 4:00 p.m. – 4:50 p.m. in Horan O’Donnell Room 107.
Information about each finalist will be posted on the myCanisius portal under the “Dean of Arts & Sciences Search” tab located on the blue navigation bar across the top of the page. Please take time to review the candidates’ curricula vitae and attend the open forums.
Electronic surveys are also available for each candidate. As you interact with a candidate by attending an open forum or in any other scheduled meetings, please take the time to provide thoughtful feedback by filling out the appropriate survey.
The deadline for all surveys is Tuesday, December 15.

Beginning today, The Dome will include a new series called Spotlights. For the remainder of this semester, The Dome will contain one article each week that focuses on student learning. These articles will describe ways in which students are learning, methods that different programs use to assess the impacts of student activities and how programs are using the results to improve student learning opportunities across campus, both in academic programs and in co-curricular and extracurricular activities. Ideally, these articles will not only allow us to recognize the energy and ingenuity that different groups use to demonstrate and improve student learning, but also to encourage broader understanding of how assessment can be accomplished and to provide more opportunities for conversations about similar activities, challenges or solutions.
Beginning next semester, we will add additional Spotlights series that recognize other successes on campus. Spotlights on Innovation in Teaching and Learning will provide examples of different methods being used to teach students in a variety of areas. Spotlights on Student-Faculty Collaborations will highlight ways in which students and faculty are working as collaborators on projects and share the results of these collaborations. Spotlights on Faculty Scholarship will recognize the academic achievements of members of the Canisius faculty to emphasize the range of scholarly expertise available on campus. Finally, Spotlights on Service will focus on activities that exemplify the Jesuit ideal of men and women with and for others. These Spotlight articles will appear in The Dome and also be used to provide content for the new Canisius website. Every student in the master’s program in college student personnel administration (CSPA) completes two required internships after the first year of study. Our students intern at colleges and universities throughout Western New York and, literally, all over the world, in a variety of different offices.
Not only do these internships provide students with outstanding hands-on experiences in the field, they also provide evidence that our students are mastering the learning goals of the program. Each internship is evaluated through the student’s reflective paper and through an evaluation developed by CSPA faculty and completed by the student’s supervisor. The evaluation utilizes a five-point scale and consists of 16 questions, eight of which are directly linked to CSPA learning goals. There is also space for supervisor comments. The data are analyzed each semester, and over the past three years, the average evaluation score is 4.49. During that same period, the program’s placement rate within six months of graduation is more than 93 percent.
Sandra Estanek, PhD, CSPA program director, is proud of these numbers because they provide strong evidence of our students’ learning, indicate the program’s success at preparing students, and support the value of its theory-to-practice educational philosophy.

WGRZ-TV 2 interviewed participants at the Canisius College Burrito Project last night. This monthly program is a ministry of hospitality and provides home-made burritos to the marginalized and homeless population in downtown Buffalo.
