Hurley Leads by Example

Canisius students (l-r) Maddie Rotterman ’17, Midge Bishop ’17, Gustavo Dos Santos ’17 and Olivia Danis ’19 recently made a special visit to President John J. Hurley’s office to thank him for his generous support of the 2015-16 Canisius Fund.

This year’s Canisius Fund campaign theme, Be the Spark, is inspired by the immortal words of Society of Jesus founder St. Ignatius Loyola who urged his followers “to go forth and set the world on fire.” Be the Spark celebrates the impact of donors’ support, which makes a Canisius education possible and ignites a fire in our students to go forth and make a difference in the world.

Canisius Presents Lecture by Mining Injustice Solidarity Network Tonight

Canisius College will present “Environmental Solidarity: Injustices and transnational mining operations in Latin America,” from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. tonight, Monday, October 26 in the Science Hall Commons. A presentation will be given by members of the Mining Injustice Solidarity Network, a Toronto-based activist group that educates about unfair practices of Canadian mining companies.

Is the transference of wealth from communities to foreign companies, the pollution of natural environments, and the persistence of human rights violations a viable model of development or progress? The group will discuss such thought-provoking topics. Come learn about their work to resist exploitation and build environmental justice.

The lecture, which is free and open to the public, is co-sponsored by the Canisius College Department of Campus Ministry, the Department of Latin American Studies, the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures, and the WNY Peace Center.

For more information, contact Terry Bisson, PhD, professor of mathematics and statistics, at Ext. 2497.
