Experience the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius

Campus Ministry is offering faculty and staff an opportunity to engage with St. Ignatius’ master work: The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. The exercises are a method of introducing people to prayer in daily life, but are not for so-called “spiritual experts.” Rather, they are for all people, regardless of religious background or lack of one, including doubters, seekers and non-believers. A spiritual director, or companion, is one who assists in guiding people through the exercises throughout the year.

Campus Ministry invites you to consider one of three methods of experiencing the Ignatian exercises this year:

Experience 1: A Busy Person’s Model
A brief meeting with a trained spiritual “companion” (someone who is trained in helping you to experience the spiritual exercises) helps you choose a prayer style that fits with your busy schedule. Some of these may include, but are not limited to:
An online three-minute daily retreat, praying the Ignatian Examen daily, Scripture and Imaginative prayer. In short, we help you find a daily method of prayer that works with the rhythm of your life. Additionally, you would meet with your companion on a regular basis.

Experience 2: A Group Experience of the Exercises
A small group of about eight people meet together and experience a version of the Spiritual Exercises over a period of eight months. The participants would pray daily using selected scripture passages and meet weekly for the first month and then twice a month for the remainder of the school year. Days and times will be determined for the group based on their collective schedules.

Experience 3: An Individual Experience of the Exercises
Individuals meet and experience a version of the Spiritual Exercises with a spiritual director over a period of eight months. The participant would pray daily using selected scripture passages and meet weekly with their spiritual director throughout the school year. Days and times will be determined for the group based on their collective schedules.

If you are interested in discussing any of these experiences further, please email or call Fr. Tom Colgan, S.J. at colgant@canisius.edu or (716) 888-2488

Peace,

Fr. Tom Colgan, S.J.
