Campus Candids

Campus Ministry’s annual summer picnic was a great success thanks to the support of everyone across campus.  Special thanks go out to Rev. Michael F. Tunney, S.J., who presided over a Mass celebrating Sue Fischer’s 15 years of ministry at Canisius.  (Sue recently retired as associate campus minister.); and Amy Betros HON ‘09, co-director of St. Luke’s Mission of Mercy, who donated hot dog and hamburger buns for the picnic. Of course, thanks to God for making it all possible.

Canisius Mourns Loss of Rev. Robert A. Haus, S.J.

Canisius College is saddened to report the passing of Rev. Robert A. Haus, S.J., a member of the Canisius College Jesuit Community and professor emeritus of mathematics.  Father Haus died on July 12.  He was 90.

“For 54 years, Father Haus was a wise and enduring presence on the Canisius campus,” said John J. Hurley, Canisius president.  “His humble and holy example captured the Jesuit essence of this place and he was an inspiration to his students and colleagues.  I will miss him greatly.”

A philosophy major at Boston College, Father Haus was pursuing a second master’s degree in mathematics at Notre Dame when, in 1959, the Provincial for the Society of Jesus gave him his Buffalo assignment.  Father Haus spent the next four decades in the classroom at Canisius.  He became well-known for his exceptional ability to explain complex math problems with ease.

During Father Haus’ tenure, he also served as dean of the college’s evening division, and faculty advisor to student government, the student affairs council, the Azuwur yearbook committee, the DiGamma Honor Society, and moderator to the freshman, sophomore, junior and senior classes.

Father Haus retired from teaching in 2004 but assumed several new roles at Canisius and within the Jesuit community.  He served as assistant to the secretary of the Board of Trustees, treasurer of the college’s Jesuit residence and he maintained the Jesuit vacation home on the Canadian shore.  Father Haus also continued to serve as a Jesuit counselor in Bosch Hall, his home since 1968 when the residence hall first opened.  During those years, Father Haus became a trusted friend and advisor to countless Canisius resident students.

Father Haus was born May 8, 1924 in Bronx, New York.  He entered the Society of Jesus at St. Andrew-on-Hudson, Poughkeepsie, NY in 1942.  He earned a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in philosophy from Boston College; a master’s degree in mathematics from the University of Notre Dame; and a licentiate of sacred theology degree from Woodstock College.

Father Haus recently moved from Canisius College to Murray-Weigel Hall, the New York Province’s infirmary and retirement residences, where he passed away.  Father Haus was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy (Haus) Bangert, and his niece, Patricia Ann Bangert.  He is survived by his nephew, Douglas A. Bangert Jr. and niece, Betty Spradlin.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held today, Wednesday, July 16 at 11:30 a.m. at the Murray-Weigel Hall Chapel (515 East Fordham Road, Bronx, NY).  Canisius College will hold a memorial service in September. (More information will follow at a later date.)

Notes of condolences may be sent to Father Haus’ nephew, Douglas A. Bangert, at 1145 Beach View Drive, St. Simon’s Island, GA, 31522.

Faculty, Staff and Their Families are Invited to Serve the Homeless with Campus Ministry

Last month twenty members of the Canisius community joined this effort. They included faculty/staff, students and alumni and their families. Erin Gaddi '14, Father Patrick Lynch, S.J. and Dr. Terri Mangione are pictured along with several students.

Faculty, staff and their family members are invited to join campus ministry and the Buffalo Burrito Project next Tuesday, July 22.  Students largely support the effort during the academic year but now that school’s out, additional volunteers are needed for this outreach ministry.

The Burrito Project provides home-made burritos to the poor and homeless population in downtown Buffalo. This outreach ministry serves some of God’s most vulnerable and forgotten children in our society.

Burritos will be prepared in our kitchen from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

From 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. the group will walk a four-mile route and serve about 80 burritos, snacks and cold drinks. (A campus ministry support van follows the team as we walk).

You may choose to help prepare the burritos, prepare and serve or just serve. Most people do both.

To sign-up, simply email Joe Van Volkenburg, vanvolkj@canisius.edu. Please include name, email and cell number.

ITS Recycling Program Continues

Canisius College Information Technology Services has been helping the campus recycling movement by encouraging everyone to recycle their old electronics, used ink jet and laser printer cartridges. To date, we have saved more than 100 cell phones and 400 inkjet cartridges from entering landfills over the last three years.

We partner with Operation Gratitude. They collect items for recycling and receive monetary support from their recycling partners. Operation Gratitude goals are to lift morale and put smiles on faces by sending care packages addressed to individual Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines deployed overseas. Operation Gratitude care packages contain food, hygiene products, entertainment items and personal letters of appreciation, all wrapped with good wishes of love and support. More information about Operation Gratitude can be found at this web site.

http://www.operationgratitude.com

Please bring your old cell phones, smart phones, PDA’s, Blackberry’s, iPods and used ink jet printer cartridges to the recycling center drop box located in the Internet Plaza on the second floor of Old Main.

Feel free to bring items from campus or home for this recycling program. Every little bit helps. ITS also encourages you to never throw old electronics into the trash. At home, please save them for one of the special county-wide recycling collection days usually held at ECC and local schools. Keep an eye on the local news for these announcements. Electronics recycling events are usually held monthly throughout Erie County.

We also recycle laser printer toner cartridges. Used laser printer cartridges can be placed in campus mail and sent directly to ITS. Please mark them for Recycling – ITS. To dispose of other electronics on campus, please contact the ITS Help Desk at Ext. 8340.

If you have any questions about the programs mentioned above or want to help out, please contact Scott Clark at Ext. 8357 or clarks@canisius.edu
