McNally One of 2012’s “Best New Poets”

“Maggie Leaves the Underworld,” a poem by Janet McNally, visiting assistant professor of English, was chosen for Best New Poets 2012: 50 Poems from Emerging Writers, an annual anthology that recognizes young American poets of exceptional talent and promise. McNally’s poem was one of only 50 chosen from more than 3,000 submitted from across the United States.

McNally holds an MFA in creative writing from the University of Notre Dame, and a BA from Canisius College (All-College Honors Program) in English and communication studies with a minor in creative writing. She teaches writing and literature in the English Department and All-College Honors Program. Her poems and stories have appeared or are forthcoming in more than a dozen literary magazines, including North American Review, Gettysburg Review, Alaska Quarterly, Crab Orchard Review, New Ohio Review, Mid-America Review and Southern Poetry Review.

Best New Poets: 50 Poems from Emerging Writers will be published by the University of Virginia Press in November.

Canisius Chorale Launches Fall Season, Invites New Members

The Canisius College Chorale invites students, faculty and staff to join its ranks for the upcoming season of concerts. The chorale’s first rehearsal will take place on Monday, August 27 at 6:30 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center. Rehearsals will continue each Monday evening at the same time. Auditions are NOT necessary for membership and everyone is welcome.

The course numbers for Chorale are FAM 181 (CRN: 30743) for 1 credit and FAM 171 (CRN: 30736) for 0 credit.

The Chorale ended a very successful Spring season that included performances throughout Western New York. Its acclaimed “Sacred Spaces” series brought hosts of eager listeners to a number of the region’s most beautiful and historic churches. And the choir’s annual Spring Concert drew a capacity audience to the college’s Montante Cultural Center again this year. The coming season’s activities include performances in some of the region’s finest concert venues, including a November 7th performance with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.

Student Records Office Reorganization

Over the summer, several changes have occurred in the Student Records Office. Dave Fischer has retired after 35 years of service to the college. We all wish Dave a happy and fulfilling retirement!

Deborah Prohn has been promoted to Associate Registrar. Deborah will continue to be responsible for GriffAudit in addition to now overseeing the undergraduate degree completion clearance process, supervising the transfer credit review process, working with the Athletic Office for NCAA student certifications, and will work with ITS to continue to develop our technologies to provide better service to our students, faculty and staff.

Sue Gruttadauria is our new Schedule and Transfer Credit Coordinator. Sue will be responsible for the summer, fall and spring master course schedule, classroom assignments, transfer credit review, working with Deborah on GriffAudit encoding and exception processing. She will be working with closely with me to streamline the schedule process and classroom assignment process.
