Former Professor of Business and Communications Bruce R. Hammond, PhD, passed away at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL on October 1. He was 82.

Born in Buffalo, Hammond held degrees from Fredonia State College, Canisius College and a doctorate from the University of Buffalo.

He had a wealth of work experiences throughout his life including that of a musician in the bands “The Playboys” and “The Graduates.” He was also a professor of business and communications for Canisius College, Jacksonville University and St Leo University, and a business consultant for Kaset International and Achieve Global.

Hammond was an avid philanthropist who took joy in helping others, especially animal charities and the local homeless community. He held leadership positions in his church and sat on many organizational boards, including the South Shore Symphony Orchestra in Tampa, FL. In his free time, he loved the arts including painting and writing. He published several novels. While serving in the Army, he developed a love of food and travel, and he would travel the world to enjoy its cuisine, both from the dining table and in the kitchen. He loved life and wanted to experience all that it had to offer.

Hammond is survived by his son, John Hammond (Jamie) of Louisville, KY; his daughter, Vanessa Hlavaty (Sean) of St Augustine, FL; and his grandchildren Elizabeth, Rebekah and Remi. Additionally, he is survived by his siblings David Hammond (Priscilla) of San Antonio, TX, Lynne Manning (Johnny) of Kenmore, NY, and Bonnie LaRotonda (Joseph) of Williamsville, NY and their children.

A visitation will be held in Buffalo, NY on Saturday November 13, 2021, from 9:30 AM – 11:30 AM at Amigone Funeral Home, 5200 Sheridan Drive, Williamsville NY 14221 with a short memorial service to follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Best Friends Animal Society of Florida, Florida Greyhound Rescue, and the South Shore Symphony Orchestra.
