Josh Russell, PhD, assistant professor of animal behavior, ecology and conservation, studied the effects of pet loss on children. When children suffer the loss of a pet, they often describe it as “the worst day of their lives” and feel a member of the family has died.  He recently discussed this research in an article in The New York Times.

Welcome Mary Braun ’14

Please welcome Mary Braun ’14, human resources assistant, to the Human Resources Department. Mary earned her bachelor’s degree in English and creative writing from the college.  Mary comes to us from Community Services for the Developmentally Disabled where she was an administrative assistant and later promoted to human resources generalist. She will be a resource for all HR functions, including recruitment, HRIS, benefits and employee relations.

In her spare time, Mary is also the music coordinator at Queen of Angels Roman Catholic Church.

Cochrane Awarded $10,000 NEA Grant

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) awarded Mick Cochrane, PhD, professor and chair of English, a $10,000 grant for the Contemporary Writers Series. Cochrane’s grant, effective June 1, 2017 through May 31, 2018, is part of more than $82 million given out to 1,029 local arts projects across the country in the NEA’s second major funding announcement for fiscal year 2017.

Developed by Cochrane, The Contemporary Writers Series brings nationally and internationally known writers to campus to share their work and to discuss their art with Canisius students in an informal setting.

Center for Urban Education Hosts Education Expert

The new Center for Urban Education at Canisius with the support from the JUSTICE Project, hosted Yvette Jackson, PhD, of the National Urban Alliance on June 8, 2017.

Jackson provided a stimulating professional development session for K-12 school partners and School of Education and Human Services faculty members. Jackson’s discussion related to her recent publication, The Pedagogy of Confidence: Inspiring High Intellectual Performance in Urban Schools.

Buffalo Burrito Project

Faculty, staff, family members, students and alumni are invited to join the Office of Campus Ministry and the Buffalo Burrito Project on Tuesday, June 27 and Tuesday, July 25.

The Burrito Project is a ministry of hospitality and provides homemade burritos to the marginalized and homeless population in downtown Buffalo. This ministry serves some of God’s most vulnerable and forgotten children.

Burritos will be prepared in the kitchen located in the undercroft of Christ the King Chapel from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. From 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., the group will walk a four-mile route and serve burritos, snacks and cold drinks. A college van follows the team as we walk.

You may choose to help prepare the burritos, prepare and serve or just serve. Most people prepare and serve.
