Service - NYC-SpotlightThirteen Canisius College students and faculty member JulNYC-2016-05ie Anna Golebiewski ’04, PhD, assistant professor of economics and finance, spent seven days in New York City for Campus Ministry’s Winter Service Week. The group lived in Brooklyn at Living Waters Fellowship and served with Friends of Rockaway Bay. The group commits to a preparation process and four cornerstones of solidarity, simplicity, social justice and spirituality for their experience.

Friends of Rockaway Bay (FoRB) is the only organization that is still assisting victims of Hurricane Sandy. The Canisius group spent five days doing first-floor demolition work on the home of Cecil Lloyd-Bay, a gentleman who has livNYC-2016-08ed in his Rockaway home since 2000. Cecil has been living in his damaged home since Sandy without running water. Volunteers with FoRB have stepped in to repair the water damage, remove mold, and fix the rest of the plumbing and electricity in the house.

NYC-2016-03The Canisius College group was able to meet up with Father John Bucki, a former director of Campus Ministry at Canisius, and some Le Moyne students for an evening reflection at the Jesuit Province’s office in Manhattan. They lived simply, cooked together, reflected each night and were able to experience a different side of NYC. This is one of many service opportunities available through Campus Ministry that help students truly be men and women for and with others. If you are interested in participating in a similar event or learning about other opportunities, please contact Campus Ministry.
