A Showcase of Research from Everyday Practice

On May 22, the JUSTICE Project at Canisius College proudly sponsored a professional development session showcasing teacher research projects. During the 2013-14 school year, teachers from the Buffalo Public School District actively participated in an ongoing professional development series that focused on implementing best practices in inclusive classroom environments. Throughout the year, teachers developed inquiry studies that monitored student outcomes. Data collection methods were utilized to measure and analyze the use of instructional strategies within classrooms.

Canisius Welcomes Kathleen Davis as Vice President for Enrollment Management

Kathleen B. Davis is the new vice president for enrollment management at Canisius College. As a member of the college’s senior management team, Davis provides leadership for undergraduate and graduate recruitment, retention and student financial aid. She also is responsible for leading the implementation of the college’s comprehensive enrollment management plan. Davis assumed the position on June 1, 2014.

Davis has more than a decade of experience in higher education. She comes to Canisius from St. Joseph’s College where she served as dean of admissions. During Davis’ tenure she collaborated on a new student financial aid matrix which resulted in a 12 percent increase in fall 2012 applications to the college. In addition, St. Joseph’s saw a 6.5 percent increase in applications and a seven percent increase in deposits in fall 2013. Prior to St. Joseph’s, Davis was director of graduate admission at St. John’s University, and associate dean of admission at New York University’s Polytechnic School of Engineering.

Davis holds an MBA from Clarkson University and a BS in business administration from Russell Sage College.

Honeywell Continues Support for Chemistry Olympiad

Canisius College is the recipient of a $10,000 grant from Honeywell’s Buffalo Research Laboratory. The funds will be used to offset costs associated with students’ preparation and participation in the Western New York Chapter of the International Chemistry Olympiad. Honeywell’s Buffalo lab has supported the Western New York Chapter of the International Chemistry Olympiad for more than 20 years and has donated more than $188,000 in support of this initiative since 2002.

The Chemistry Olympiad is a local, national and international competition designed to stimulate and promote achievement in high school chemistry. It is sponsored in the U.S. by the American Chemical Society and hosted locally by Canisius College under the direction of Mariusz Kozik, PhD, chair of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

Retirement Reception for Joe Rizzo

Please join friends and colleagues in the Old Main Faculty Lounge on Wednesday, June 18 at 2:00 p.m. to thank Joe Rizzo for his 18 years of service to Canisius College and to wish him well as he retires. Many of you know Joe as a patient and knowledgeable computer professional and workshop instructor. His last day on campus will be June 30.

Quit Smoking – You Can Do It!

According to the American Cancer Society, people who stop smoking before age 50 cut their risk of dying in the next 15 years in half, compared with those who continue to smoke.

Quitting takes a lot of hard work and effort, but there are immediate benefits to quitting. Did you know:

  • Within 20 minutes, blood pressure returns to normal and heartbeat stabilizes
  • Within eight hours, oxygen levels in your blood increase
  • Within 48 hours, chances of heart attack decrease
  • Within three months, circulation and the immune system improves

  • Change daily routines to upset your smoking habit
  • Cut down on your amount of smoking before you quit
