In Memoriam: Lawrence Minet, PhD

Canisius College mourns the passing of professor emeritus of economics/finance Lawrence Minet, PhD, who died on November 22. He joined the ranks of Canisius faculty in 1957 and previously taught at John Carroll University and Duquesne University. He was elevated to emeritus status in 1996.

Minet was a “fixture” in the faculty lounge for years and spent most of his time in the lounge reading and passing the day. He was also a poet and composed approximately 200 poems, many of which can be found online here, including the following:

Spring Promising Immortality To An Old Man

When the sweet renascence is young
With new life winter’s dying sires,
He marvels after larks have sung
Where he remembered ruined choirs.

He marvels with what lyricism
The winter silences have ended;
As light is to a crystal prism,
Song is to one it’s comprehended.

That songs of birds encompass him
In great concentric choral rings
Fills his cup of bliss to a rim
Overflowing when wonder sings

Of the death needed for rebirth,
Arctic ships finding tropic berth.
