From John J. Hurley, President

I hope that your summer has been both restful and productive. There are many changes at Canisius and I promise you that it will be a very busy Fall semester.

As many are aware, for the past several years, Canisius has had a Cabinet composed of the vice presidents and others to serve in a consulting role to the president. At Canisius, the Cabinet evolved over the years from a group consisting of just the vice presidents to a larger group including additional individuals, mostly associate vice presidents. The Cabinet met weekly and generally heard oral reports from each member about what was happening at the college. Substantive issues were taken up from time to time and recommendations were made to the president.

After giving this some considerable thought, I have decided that the present configuration of the Cabinet and the frequency and format of its meetings do not provide the optimal level of operating management for the college. Accordingly, I have disbanded the Cabinet and have formed a new Senior Operating Team to manage the operations of the college on a month to month basis.

The Senior Operating Team’s agenda will be a substantive one and the team will be expected to review reports on critical operational areas of the college and recommend changes and new initiatives. We will rely on data, and the vice presidents have been working over the summer to identify key aspects of the college’s operations that need to be measured and monitored.

The college’s strategic planning efforts will continue to be led by the Long Range Strategic Planning Committee (LRSPC) which also includes elected faculty representation and student representation. Implementation of the strategic plan is something which the Senior Operating Team will share with other groups on campus, like the Budget Committee and the LRSPC, itself.

I have appointed the following individuals to the Senior Operating Team:

Antone F. Alber, PhD
Khalid W. Bibi, PhD
John P. Bucki, S.J.
Scott A. Chadwick, PhD
Craig T. Chindemi
Dianna Civello
Edward P. Cogan
Joel A. Cohen, PhD
Ellen O. Conley, PhD
Michael J. Eadie
David W. Ewing, PhD

Blair W. Foster
William J. Maher
Terri L. Mangione, PhD
J. Patrick Mizak, PhD
Jerome L. Neuner, PhD
Michael J. Pardales, PhD
Debra S. Park
Patrick E. Richey
Erica C. Surbone Sammarco
Donna L. Shaffner
Deborah J. Siegrist

These are exciting yet challenging times for Canisius College. I hope that this fresh look at how we manage our operations will assist us in meeting our many challenges and achieving our vision for Canisius College. I look forward to working with all of you.
