Mathematics at the Core
Saturday, January 28, 2017
8:30 – 4:30
Canisius College Science Hall
1901 Main Street, Buffalo, NY 14208

The theme of this year’s conference, Mathematics at the Core, was chosen to show the many roles where mathematics can be found to be a “core” element. It could be in STEM, STEAM, CCLS, or interdisciplinary endeavors.

We are hard at work getting everything set for out Mathematics at the Core Professional Development Conference. The following is a sample of the sessions that are being prepared.

Registration is open – Early Bird Rates are in effect until December 15th. Take advantage of a $10 discount by registering early.

We are a CTLE Approved Sponsor.

Boosting Fact Fluency Around Multiplication & Division

Eileen Ryan

This workshop introduces a strategies-based approach to building solid basic fact knowledge, which moves students well beyond memorization, flashcards, skip-counting, finger tricks, and jingles.

Teacher Burnout

Fran McGreevy, Pete Dobmeier

All

This workshop will help participants to understand what burnout is, how and why most of us experience it, the effects it has on educators and students and how to combat it.

Manipulatives as Tools for Thinking                                                                       Susan Corcoran, Kristin Stark

PreK-4

A common criticism of the K-3 Common Core Standards in Mathematics is that they are too ambitious — that they require students to master facts and skills for which they are not developmentally ready. We have found rekenreks, digi-blocks, and number balances to be powerful tools for developing number sense and a deep understanding of the arithmetic operations in a manner wholly consistent with the K-3 content standards and the mathematical practices standards.  We will share tasks, video clips, and samples of student work.

Flipping the High School Math Classroom

Allison Couche

9-12

Flipping the classroom can impact student understanding and success through differentiation. The presentation will cover the benefits, logistics, and difficulties of flipping a high school math classroom.

Professional Development for a 1-to-1 School

Allison Couche

5-12

This presentation will discuss one approach to ongoing professional development that could be applied to numerous topics but has been implemented and well-received in a 1-to-1 iPad school. The approach involves differentiating the professional development experience for each teacher by offering choice, equipping teachers to serve as community leaders, and scaffolding instruction to meet the needs of all faculty members.

Problems before Procedures

Nilam Yagielski, David Gerspach

5-12

Too often, mathematics instruction is focused on the ‘how to solve’ (procedures and algorithms), rather than the rich mathematical ideas that are worthy of exploration. This presentation will focus on how students can be challenged with problems that offer a productive struggle that can lead to the construction of mathematical knowledge and the development of the mathematical practices. Easily incorporated or adaptable routines, problems, and tasks will be shared that lead to mathematical curiosity and the construction of mathematical knowledge.

Rewriting the Worksheet: How to Create Student-Centered Collaborative Practice in the Classroom

Denea Czapla

5-12

Let’s explore how to turn a traditional worksheet of math practice into student-centered, hands-on and engaging activities appropriate for middle and high school math classrooms.

Assessment for Learning in the Elementary Mathematics Classroom

Kari Fiutak

PreK-4

Formative assessment is one of the most powerful tools a teacher can use to grow active and successful learners. Learn more about these strategies in this session.

National Board Certification

Mary Dileas, Rebecca Zuch, Sara Rodland

Amazon Education and TenMarks Math

Beth Connelly, Elmer Ildefonso

PreK-4

Teaching Mathematics and approaching RtI through differentiated instruction requires a shift of thinking and focus. New research supports brain plasticity- the ability to learn and grow learning potential throughout life. Jo Boeller and carol Dweck’s research shows that this awareness in teachers and students changes the picture for the future of mathematics learning and engagement. My sessions on Mathematics will demonstrate how to create mathematical practices that support growth mindset and student engagement. My behavioral sessions will focus on “disruptive” behavior and its origins in frustration and fear of failure. We will explore how to support growth and success in students who have experienced failure. Daily practice can lead to re-engagment and reduction in disruptive behavior.

Reasoning with Division

Darlene Rombola

PreK-8

Using models and strategies we will explore the different meanings of division and how to help students build a deep conceptual understanding. No algorithms here!

A Great Book Can Do More Than Entertain!

Nicki Calabrese, David Bauer

PreK-4

Children’s literature can provide wonderful opportunities for young children to learn and practice math and science concepts.

Elementary/Middle CCSS Math from a High School Math Perspective
