Hello, my name is Siobhan Dougherty I am a second-year graduate student at Canisius University currently working on a cybersecurity research project. I am seeking to learn more about what is vulnerable on public networks. Specifically, I am going to be working with public WIFI and attempt wifi sniffing with the HackRF One, to see what information I can gather that is going over the network.

The HackRF is an open-source software-defined radio developed by Michael Ossmann. Wi-Fi network sniffers work by crawling across a wireless network to intercept a wide range or a small subsection of data packets as they pass through the network, gathering information about those packets and using the information to provide insights into what’s going on in a network.

Here is what a HackRF One looks like:

You can find out more about HackRF One and its capabilities at its home page: https://greatscottgadgets.com/hackrf/one/

At the conclusion of the project, I am hoping to be able to be able to identify and categorize the different sites that are accessed by consumers on the network. Also to see if I was able to access any sensitive information or inject packets into WiFi replies.

I will be updating this blog with developments and roadblocks I encounter while I go through the next ten weeks. Stay tuned!
