Selecting a Mental Health Professional

Sometimes the hardest part about seeking help for mental health can be finding the right provider for your personal needs. With May being Mental Health Awareness month, take some time to read the article, above, by Lawley Insurance Group, which gives an overview of each type of mental health professional along with recommendations on how to start the process of getting the help you need, and the right fit.

As a reminder to all faculty and staff, Canisius College offers an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) through Integrated Behavioral Health (IBH), which offers a variety of services to promote well-being. This includes free, confidential counseling, assessment and referral services to all employees.

For more resources and information related to family support, legal assistance, fitness, mental health resources and work-related help, call 1-800-386-7055 (available 24/7), Email eapcounselor@ibhcorp.com or visit www.ibhworklife.com with the login information below.

COLI’s End of Semester Checklist for Instructors

It’s the end of the semester again. Here are some actions you should take by the week after grades are due:

  • Enter your Final Grades through MyCanisius. Click here for a brief video tutorial.
  • If you want students to see their Final Calculated Grade, click here to see a tutorial on how to do that.
  • Export your gradebook to archive the grades for your personal record. See this tutorial here to do that.
  • Archive your entire D2L course in the Brightspace format at the end of each term for your personal record. Click this link to see how to do that.
  • If you are teaching courses in the next semester, copy course content so you do not have to rush through it and have time to work on it in between semesters. Click here to see how. Text instructions are available here.
  • If you have not already, inform the Canisius Bookstore of any books or Cengage Unlimited products you intend to use. If you are not planning on using books or Cengage Unlimited products, let the bookstore know that as well. See their page here for more contact information.

Sign-In Updates to D2L and Zoom

For security purposes, changes are occurring to how we log into D2L and Zoom.

D2L

Starting at the end of the Spring 2022 semester (Thursday, May 19th), instead of seeing the D2L login page, you will see the familiar Canisius College login page. This is a minor change and should have little to no impact on how you access D2L.

Zoom

Sometime during the Summer months (between June and August), you will only be able to log into Zoom using your Canisius College Password. This means that, if you logged into Zoom using your Canisius Email address but used a password that was different from your Canisius Password, you will now be required to log into Zoom using your Canisius Email and Password via Single-Sign-On (SSO). This also means that you will have to go to canisius.zoom.us to access your online Zoom account instead of going to zoom.us. Additionally, for the desktop and mobile app, please view the instructions for logging in using SSO by clicking this link here. This change should have little to no impact on scheduled meetings, saved recordings, or Zoom settings.

Honoring Presidency of John J. Hurley

More than 500 of President John J. Hurley’s closest family, friends and supporters gathered at the Atrium@Rich’s on Friday, May 6 to celebrate his 25-year legacy at Canisius College.  Independent Health sponsored the event, which radiated the spirit of Canisius.  The room sparkled with blue and gold, and was accented by visual displays that showcased the college’s transformation throughout the years.

The evening included an invocation by Rev. Richard Zanoni, SJ, associate pastor at St. Michael’s Church, and a reflection and vocal performance by Sydnie Perkins ’16, MS ’20. The event’s honorary co-chair, Dennis Strigl ’74, HON ’11, eloquently introduced a video tribute, which encapsulated Hurley’s resilient, thoughtful and dedicated leadership.

The program concluded with President Hurley sharing his own memorable remarks.

Men’s Swim Team Spruces Up People’s Park

The Men’s Swim team picked up where the women left off last week and continued to plant, weed, paint and spruce up the People’s Park.  The community garden houses a free little library,  garden beds, ornamental flowers and many locations to sit and enjoy the trees and flowers.   Many thanks to Scott Vandezell, the coach of the swimming team, for encouraging participation from his squad.

Community members from the New Buffalo Institute also showed up this past weekend to help turn the beds at the Jefferson Avenue garden.  Thanks to Amun Heru Ra for organizing and for the effort from all of the residents of Hamlin Park who came out to help.  If you are interested in learning more about gardening, check out this series of free courses sponsored by Freedom Gardens.

As required, the campus community has an opportunity to comment on proposed edits to all policies. The 60-day comment period the Hiring for Mission Policy and the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Policy is now open.
