Volunteers are critical partners at St. Luke’s, which ministers to the homeless and the hungry in our community.
Congratulations to Bennie Williams. The assistant dean of students and director of the Urban Leadership Learning Community received the Advisor of the Year Award from National Association for Masterminds and Co-Curricular Advancement (NAMCA). Williams was recognized for his leadership in helping up-and-coming motivational speakers and educational trainers engage, entertain and educate audiences so they may find employment by high schools, colleges, universities and companies.
NAMCA’s mission is to get more women and BIPOC paid speaking opportunities at colleges, universities and beyond. It is the only such Black-owned organization in the college space.

COLI has an upcoming workshop on Online Teaching and Learning!
Faculty who currently teach online courses learn about new methods, technologies and other possibilities that have appeared recently, and especially since they completed online teaching training years ago. This is also a great opportunity to meet others who teach online at Canisius University, in order to build a community of colleagues who can provide support and insights for each other.
There are two separate sessions you can sign up for. The first is Thursday, November 9 at 9:00 a.m. The second is Wednesday, November 29, at 3:00 p.m.
These sessions will be online via Zoom for approximately one hour.
RSVP for either of the sessions on the Faculty Development Events Form! While you are there, check out our other Workshops and Faculty Development Events!
Did you know that the MyCanisius Portal is home to a universal calendar that includes important dates, upcoming campus events, student activities and athletic games? Even better, the portal calendar enables users to “add” events, which they may be interested in attending, to their personal digital calendars (i.e. Google, Microsoft, Outlook, etc.).
And for those who regularly schedule campus events, activities or lectures, the “calendar” app can be a useful tool in determining the dates and times, so as to avoid conflicts with other departmental events, thereby improving attendance.
To access the “calendar” app, simply:
Sign in to the MyCanisius Portal
Under the left hand navigation bar, click “My Calendars” -> “Faculty/Staff”
The calendar is color-coded to distinguish between events, student activities, institutional meetings and other areas.
The OFDC (Online Faculty Development Course) offered by COLI is for full-time and part-time faculty, whether new to D2L, or experienced with technology for teaching. This five-week mini-courseprepares instructors to teach online and hybrid courses. The OFDC provides many practical tips for teaching online but more importantly, helps faculty explore new pedagogies for active learning, social presence, and community in courses on the internet.
Additionally, the updated OFDC offers insights on what Regular and Substantive Interactions (RSI)are and how to incorporate RSI into your courses. It also includes information on Panopto, Canisius’s new video content management system, how it works, and how to best fit Panopto into your courses.
The OFDC can help professors craft engaging, interactive online experiences for students, either for all-online courses, or hybrid courses that feature limited use of the classroom. This semester, we are offering one starting November 13th and ending on December 16th. Stay tuned to the COLI Blog and the Dome for more sessions! To RSVP, please check out the COLI faculty development events here.

If you’ve noticed some new faces across campus, they’re likely one of the university’s six new faculty members. The group joined the Canisius community at the start of the fall semester and now that they’re acclimated to campus, we thought it an apt time to introduce each of them, individually, in upcoming issues of The Dome.
