Jesuit Values at the Border

The campus community is invited to learn about the college’s new hybrid study abroad/internship/service learning opportunity at the U.S. Mexico border during a presentation on Monday, February 27 at 7:00 p.m. in Science Hall.  The program, titled “Jesuit Values at the Border,” is being offered in partnership with Kino Border Initiative (KBI).  Canisius students Emma Marzec, Emma Radel and Julianna Falsone recently completed a summer project with KBI and will serve as presenters at this event.

Since 2009, the Kino Border Initiative has worked at fostering bi-national solidarity through humanitarian assistance, education and advocacy, on each side of the Mexico border in Nogales, Arizona and Nogales, Sonora, Mexico.

Canisius Presents “Firebird”

The LGBTQIA+ Speakers Series at Canisius College presents a conversation with the director and lead actor of the film “Firebird” on Monday, February 6 at 12:00 noon.  The presentation takes place in the Andrew L. Bouwhuis Library Learning Center, and will also be available in a webinar format.

Based on the true story of a clandestine love affair between a fighter pilot and an enlisted man, “Firebird” tells their romantic story with the backdrop of Soviet Occupied Estonia.

The film has played at Pride festivals throughout Europe.  Putin doesn’t want you to see it.  What more reason to watch the film than an illicit love affair, the Cold War, beautiful scenery and censorship?  Then join us for a conversation with Tom Prior the lead actor, and Peeter Rebane the director.

The film can be screening on streaming services and video on demand.

Conversations with Aid Workers and Ukrainian Refugees in Poland

ukrainian-refugee-ceep-poster-2

The inaugural series of events continues after President Stoute’s installation with “Ukrainian Refugees in Poland: A Conversation with Aid Workers in Warsaw and Przemysl.”

The hybrid event (in person and virtual) takes place Wednesday, October 26 at 12:00 p.m. in the Bouwhuis Library Learning Center.  Aid workers from Warsaw and Przemysl will Zoom in to share their experiences working on the front lines of the Ukraine-Poland border. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, it’s estimated that nearly four million people have fled to neighboring Poland. The newly-arrived refugees come primarily from those areas most heavily affected by the fighting and are initially assisted at reception centers along the Ukraine-Poland border.

This lecture is made possible by the Borders & Migrations Initiative.  The QR code on the flyer can be used to make donations via PayPal.
