Introducing the 2024 I. Joan Lorch Award Winners

The Canisius University Women & Gender Studies program is happy to announce the 2024 Lorch Award winners. The Dr. I. Joan Lorch Award for Women & Gender Studies honors a person who has made a significant contribution to women and who exemplifies the pursuit of liberation and justice regarding sex, gender, and sexuality.

In the category of Canisius University student, the winner is: Bex Nagel ’25, Strategic Communications, Sociology and Women & Gender Studies.

In the category of Canisius University employee, the winner is: Kim Griffin, ’11, Head Coach of Women’s Softball.

In the category of a community organization or person(s), the winners are: Adrienne Hill and Ana Grujić of the Buffalo-Niagara LGBTQ History Project.

We congratulate all of these deserving people who help to make our world a more equitable world each day.

We heartily welcome everyone to celebrate Women’s History Month — and these 4 awardees in particular—on Thursday, March 21 4:00– 5:30 pm  in the Grupp Fireside Lounge.  Please join us for drinks, appetizers, and feminist solidarity and inspiration.

Call for Nominations

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2024 I. Joan Lorch Award for Women & Gender Studies.  This award honors “a person who has made a significant contribution to women and who exemplifies the pursuit of liberation and justice regarding sex, gender, and sexuality.”

The three categories for the Lorch award are: (1) Student award: this award honors any current undergraduate or graduate student at Canisius College; (2) Canisius colleague award: this award honors any current Canisius University employee (faculty, staff, or administrator — full or part time), and; (3) Community member award: this award honors any member of the wider community who is not a current student or employee of Canisius University.

The celebration to honor the three awardees will take place during the month of March, Women’s History Month.

Deadline for nominations is February 15, 2024. All nominations should include: your name, your nominee’s name and contact information, and a 100-200 word description as to why the nominee is a deserving recipient of the Lorch award. Women & Gender Studies hosted the annual I. Joan Lorch Celebration on Tuesday, March 28 in the Grupp Fireside Lounge.  The Dr. I. Joan Lorch Award for Women & Gender Studies honors individuals who have made a significant contributions to women, and who exemplify the pursuit of liberation and justice regarding sex, gender and sexuality.

Following an introduction from Tanya Loughead, PhD, professor of philosophy, and a blessing by Rev. Patrick J. Lynch, SJ, the following three outstanding award winners were recognized in their respective categories:   T

(1) Canisius Student Award: Hawa Saleh ’24, English, creative writing and history

(2) Canisius Colleague Award: Secil Erdogan Ertorer, PhD, associate professor, sociology

(3) Community Award: Geo Hernandez ’17, ’19, community organizer and activist

Joan Lorch Awards Announced

The Women & Gender Studies program invites you to the annual Lorch Awards celebration. The Dr. I. Joan Lorch Award for Women & Gender Studies honors a person who has made a significant contribution to women, and who exemplifies the pursuit of liberation and justice regarding sex, gender and sexuality.  The awards ceremony will take place on Tuesday, March 28 from 3:30-5:00 p.m. in the Grupp Fireside Lounge in the Student Center.  Happy hour drinks and appetizers will be served.  This event is free and open to the public.

This year we celebrate three outstanding award winners in the following categories:

(1) Canisius Student Award: Hawa Saleh, ’24 English, Creative Writing, and History.

(2) Canisius Colleague Award: Secil Erdogan Ertorer, PhD,  Associate Professor, Sociology.

(3) Community Award: Geo Hernandez, Community organizer and activist, Canisius alumna.

Congratulations to all! At this event, each of the award winners will be honored and offer a brief speech.  We welcome everyone to join us in feminist solidarity and camaraderie on Tuesday, March 28.
