Lodi-Smith Leads Meta-Analysis Examining Self-Concept Clarity and Self- Esteem

New research led by Associate Professor of Psychology Jenn Lodi-Smith, PhD, has been published in Self and Identity, a scholarly journal dedicated to the study of social and psychological processes of the self.

Lodi-Smith and her co-authors conducted a meta-analysis of 144 studies involving more than 67,000 participants to examine the relationship between self-concept clarity – the perceived confidence, coherence and consistency of one’s self-concept – and self-esteem, or how positively they evaluate themselves.

The analysis found a strong positive relationship between the two, with people who reported greater self-concept clarity also tending to report higher self-esteem. The researchers also found that the strength of the relationship varied based on factors including country, language and the measures used in individual studies.

The findings underscore the importance of considering both self-concept clarity and self-esteem when studying how people understand and evaluate themselves and their relationship to life outcomes.
