Midterms in D2L

With midterms coming up, it may be useful to review these features of D2L Quizzes and Dropboxes.

D2L Quizzes provides a robust tool to grade quizzes easier and quicker. Some features can help prevent cheating to a degree, like basic question randomization and advanced question randomization. If you want to use questions from a previous exam or quiz, the Question Library lets you copy questions to the mid-term. Additionally, for faster grading, you can connect the Quiz to the gradebook. You can also have your students sign an Academic Integrity Pledge before continuing to the Midterm. Customize the Quiz Result display to show students what questions they got and see where they need to brush up on their studying.

Please note that if you allow automatic grading of your exam, D2L will not automatically grade written responses. Those need to be graded manually. Inform your students that the grade they have immediately after completing the exam is not reflective of their overall grade. If you want to see all of the tutorials on the D2L Quiz tool that COLI has compiled, check the Online Quizzes and Exams in the Quizzes Tool Section.

D2L Dropboxes are a great way to receive student work in various formats but more notably PDFs, Microsoft Office files, JPGs or PNGs. You can also restrict the types of files the dropbox will accept. Attach the dropbox to the grade book or use a D2L Rubric and attach it to the dropbox for faster grading.

For more information on D2L Dropboxes, check out the Collecting Assignments in Dropboxes Section. For tutorials on D2L Rubrics, check out the Using Rubrics Section. If you would prefer, you can also sign up for COLI workshops or sign up for a Consultation with one of COLI’s staff members.

COLI has compiled other resources on the various tool sets in D2L. Check the D2L Self-paced Training for Faculty and Staff Wiki page.

Lifelong Learners Examine Symphonies

Canisius Adult Lifelong Learners Institute (CALLI) is pleased to announce our new fall 2024 course: What is a Symphony?

Lead by Mason Cancilla, this six-week course will delve into a centuries-old musical template that is still used today. We will attempt to answer the question: “What is this mysterious art form and how do I listen to it?”

The course will look at musical form, instrumentation and how the modern orchestra evolved. This course is in-person on campus in SH 1017 and begins October 1 at 2:00 p.m.  See the attached poster or our website for details.

PreMed Students Focus on Environmental Health Justice

PreMed and PreHealth students attended Igniting Hope 2024: Building an Environmentally Just Community at the Jacobs School of Medicine on September 21.

The annual conference focuses on addressing health equity and the social determinants of health.  It is co-sponsored by the Buffalo Center for Health Equity, The Erie County Department of Health, the UB Clinical and Translational Science Institute, and the UB Community Health Equity Research Institute.

Break-out sessions focused on health equity workforce development, housing/green construction, food systems, advocacy and policy, and maternal health and environment. The CEO for the Center of Environmental Justice gave a keynote address, “Women’s Health Equity, Toxics in Our Environment & How We Can Take Action,”  which highlighted the role consumer goods play in exposure to toxic chemicals.

Our students volunteered to help run the conference and also helped the Buffalo Center for Health Equity run a Community Day Celebration the night before the conference. A team of Canisius PreMed students were invited by the Buffalo Center for Health Equity to host a nutrition/sugar education table at the celebration to help attendees understand the quantity of sugar contained in commonly consumed food/drink and the impact of excessive sugar consumption on health.

Changes in D2L

In October, you will see two minor changes in D2L.

By October 16 (after fall break), D2L will no longer have the Tasks tool on the My Home or Course Home screens.

Also, the Role Switch block on the Course Home screen will go away.

Role Switch is currently available on most pages by clicking your name in the upper right. This way to access the role switch tool is here to stay, as it is more efficient.

COLI and ITS try to balance beneficial change with managing disruptions to our community’s work. We also seek to keep D2L as simple and as efficient as possible for students, faculty and staff.

CALLI Book Club Examines the Bronze Age Collapse

Join the Canisius Adult Lifelong Learning Institute (CALLI) for its fall 2024 book club.

On Thursday, October 17, at 1:30 p.m., we will discuss the Eric H. Cline’s  “1177 BC: The Year Civilization Collapsed” (2014)

Near the beginning of the 12th century BC, many kingdoms and civilizations of the eastern Mediterranean began to decline. Some disappeared from history. For a long time, archaeologists blamed a mysterious invasion force known as The Sea Peoples as the cause of this mass collapse. What really happened? Join us as we look at this book.

We will meet in Old Main 219. Bring your lunch and join the conversation.
