Congratulations and commendations for Bill Maher whom the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) named the Athletic Director of the Year on Monday. He is one of 28 winners of the Cushman & Wakefield AD of the Year Award.
The award spans seven divisions (NCAA FBS, FCS, Division I-AAA, II, III, NAIA/Other Four-Year Institutions and Junior College/Community Colleges). Winners will be recognized in conjunction with the 58th Annual NACDA & Affiliates Convention at the World Center Marriott Resort in Orlando, FL, at the beginning of the Association-Wide Featured Session on Tuesday, June 13, starting at 4 p.m.
The Athletic Director of the Year Award highlights the efforts of athletics directors at all levels for their commitment and positive contributions to student-athletes, campuses and their surrounding communities.
Maher is in his 18th year leading the Canisius athletic department, making him the longest-tenured athletic director among the four Division I schools in Western New York, and ranking him fourth among active athletic directors within the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).

As we progress through the spring semester, please review these important reminders and updates from the Office of Human Resources as you plan for your time off this summer and warmer days ahead!
Early Closure-Holy Thursday
The college will close at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 6th. All but essential operating personnel are included in this early closure. The College will be closed on Friday, April 7th and will reopen on Monday, April 10th.
Use of Vacation Time- Through June 30
For all regular staff not subject to the college’s collective bargaining agreement, your vacation and personal time is available for your use through June 30, 2023. Staff are permitted to carry over 5 days (37.5 hours) of vacation time into the new benefit year, beginning July 1.
Personal leave must be used by June 30 and will not carry over into the next year. Please check your balances in Self-Service Banner and work with your supervisor to schedule your time off.
Summer Hours and Early Closure Fridays
Effective May 30, office hours will be 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
Early closure on Fridays will be in effect, beginning May 26 through August 11 with the following hours: 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Some offices may be required to staff their offices on Friday afternoons to meet the needs of students. As we have in past years, alternative scheduling options will remain available.
Summer Holidays
As a reminder, the College will be closed on Monday, June 19th in recognition of the Juneteenth holiday. Please watch for additional communications regarding the Juneteenth campus community service opportunity on June 8th from 9am-1pm.
In addition to the closure on Tuesday, July 4th for the 4th of July holiday, President Stoute has designated Monday, July 3rd as a President’s Holiday!

Canisius welcomes nationally bestselling author Silas House to campus on Wednesday, April 19, 2023 at 5:30 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center.
House’s talk, titled “Complicated Love: On Appalachia” is free and open to the public. The event is presented under the auspices of the college’s William H. Fitzpatrick Chair of Political Science Lecture Series.
House is an acclaimed multi-award-winning and New York Times bestselling novelist. Most recently, he received the 2023 Southern Book Prize in Fiction for his novel Lark Ascending. The novel was a SIBA bestseller and has also been chosen as a “Booklist” Editor’s Choice, one of “Salon’s” favorite books of the year, one of “Garden and Gun’s” selections for Best Southern Books of 2022, and as a top 10 most recommended book by independent booksellers across the nation in the monthly Indie Next List.
House is the author of six additional novels—Clay’s Quilt, 2001; A Parchment of Leaves, 2003; The Coal Tattoo, 2005; Eli the Good, 2009; Same Sun Here (co-authored with Neela Vaswani) 2012; and Southernmost, 2018, as well as a book of creative nonfiction, Something’s Rising, co-authored with Jason Howard, 2009; and three plays.
He serves as the NEH Chair of Appalachian Studies at Berea College, on the fiction faculty at the Naslund-Mann School of Creative Writing at Spalding University in Louisville, and as a series editor for Fireside Industries at the University Press of Kentucky.
As a result of the 2018 campus climate study, Canisius College developed and implemented its first racial equity strategic plan. The college has been taking steps to cultivate a thriving academic community, one where each individual feels welcome and able to contribute their full selves to the work and study that takes place here.
To that end, part of our racial equity strategic plan is to continue to learn how the campus community sees itself and what goals might be formed to help us to continue to become more inclusive.
