IRS Announces 2023 Contribution Limits

The IRS has announced the new maximum contribution limits for 2023 for 403(b) plans.  The annual maximum contribution limit for those under age 50 will increase to $22,500.  Employees who are over age 50 (or will turn 50 in 2023) may contribute an additional $7,500 increasing the annual maximum contribution limit to $30,000 for 2023.  Please note that these limits apply only to the Employee contributions.

TIAA will notify Human Resources of the change request and Human Resources will update the contribution amount.

SAVE THE DATE: Annual MLK Celebration

The Canisius College community is asked to mark their calendars for Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at 3:30 p.m. in the Regis Rooms for the annual MLK Celebration sponsored by the ALANA Student Center.

This year’s keynote speaker will be Dr. Tara Jabbaar-Gyambrah, CEO and founder of TMJ Consulting.

Honors All Around at AHPERD Conference

Students and faculty from the Physical and Health Education/Teacher Education (P/HETE) program attended the 84th annual New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NYS AHPERD) conference from Thursday, November 17 – Saturday, November 19 in Verona, NY. Current teacher candidates Shane Rende and Jesse Pfeiffer along with Darcy Mitchell MS ‘22 were honored as P/HETE Major Award Winners during the Amazing Persons Ceremony on Thursday, November 17. The award is given to two undergraduate and one graduate student for outstanding performance relevant to his or her preparation for the profession in the areas of health, physical education, recreation or dance.

Additionally, three noteworthy professionals received awards for their efforts in K-12 health and physical education.

Brandi Pettit ’15 (pictured, left) and Kevin Yarnell (pictured, right) took home Amazing Person honors while Lorie Bifarella (pictured,below) received statewide distinction as NYS AHPERD’s Professional of the Year.  Both Yarnell and Bifarella serve as student-teaching supervisor instructors for the college.

The Western Zone Chapter of the association and the Canisius College P/HETE program collaborated once again for the annual social for zone members, current teacher candidates and former alumni of the college. A special thanks to Lauren Kicak, associate director of graduate admissions, for her co-sponsorship of the event.

Finally, Clancy Seymour, EdD, associate professor and director of health, physical education and sport pedagogy in the Teacher Education and Leadership Department, presented on several occasions culminating with Historical Perspectives in Physical Education: Then and Now at the 16th Annual Dr. Ron Feingold Lecture Series. Dr. Seymour was also bestowed NYS AHPERD’s customary Past President Jacket for his efforts as President of the Association over the past four years.

WFDW Registration is Now LIVE!

The Winter Faculty Development Week Registration page is now LIVE! Mark your calendars! WFDW is from January 9th, 2023 to January 12th, 2023.

A few things to note about this year:

We currently have one Zoom session, Tik Tok Boom! The Pros and Cons of Using TikToks in Political Science!. If you are unable to attend this session on Campus, you can get a link by filling out the Zoom Registration link on the WFDW page. For those on campus at this time, please fill out the WFDW registration page. We will move to OM 301 for this session.

Additionally, this year we are doing a Celebration of Scholarship! Faculty with publications from 2021-2022 are encouraged to fill out the Scholarship in Celebration form and join us in Old Main 104 to have their work celebrated with colleagues! This link is also available on the WFDW page.

At these meetups, the attending faculty may hear from the Faculty-Student Liason Committee and can learn about new approaches, supports, advisement, and more from Student Affairs and the Griff Center.
