Students and faculty from the Physical and Health Education/Teacher Education (P/HETE) program attended the 84th annual New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NYS AHPERD) conference from Thursday, November 17 – Saturday, November 19 in Verona, NY. Current teacher candidates Shane Rende and Jesse Pfeiffer along with Darcy Mitchell MS ‘22 were honored as P/HETE Major Award Winners during the Amazing Persons Ceremony on Thursday, November 17. The award is given to two undergraduate and one graduate student for outstanding performance relevant to his or her preparation for the profession in the areas of health, physical education, recreation or dance.
Additionally, three noteworthy professionals received awards for their efforts in K-12 health and physical education.
Brandi Pettit ’15 (pictured, left) and Kevin Yarnell (pictured, right) took home Amazing Person honors while Lorie Bifarella (pictured,below) received statewide distinction as NYS AHPERD’s Professional of the Year. Both Yarnell and Bifarella serve as student-teaching supervisor instructors for the college.
The Western Zone Chapter of the association and the Canisius College P/HETE program collaborated once again for the annual social for zone members, current teacher candidates and former alumni of the college. A special thanks to Lauren Kicak, associate director of graduate admissions, for her co-sponsorship of the event.
Finally, Clancy Seymour, EdD, associate professor and director of health, physical education and sport pedagogy in the Teacher Education and Leadership Department, presented on several occasions culminating with Historical Perspectives in Physical Education: Then and Now at the 16th Annual Dr. Ron Feingold Lecture Series. Dr. Seymour was also bestowed NYS AHPERD’s customary Past President Jacket for his efforts as President of the Association over the past four years.
