Cultivating a Practice of Equity Mindedness

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion would like to invite the campus community to participate in an important and upcoming event: Cultivating a Practice of Equity Mindedness.

The event is part of the college’s series of events surrounding the inauguration of President Steve Stoute.  It will be presented by Angell Howard, associate director of professional development at Illinois State University and Owner of Necessary Change Consulting.  The event takes place on Tuesday, October 25, from 3:00 -5:00 p.m. in Science Hall, Room 063 (Women’s Business Center Classroom)

This is an interactive session where participants will discuss the difference between equity and equality, develop equity minded goals and examine what is needed to make equitable decisions.  Equity has long been depicted as three individuals of different heights standing along a fence watching a baseball game.  One individual is tall enough to see over the fence, while the other two need to stand on boxes of varying heights.  At first glance, everyone receives what is needed to access the game, however the real barrier remains, the fence.

Please register for the workshop by clicking here.

Tea and Community

Announcing the new name for Tea@2! We are now “re-branded” as Humanitea and, thanks to the stellar creativity of Rowan Giblin ’23,  we will use a new logo!

Tea@2 is a fantastic Canisius College tradition, and we look forward to continuing it! Humanitea takes place most Friday afternoons at 2:00 p.m. in Old Main Room 418 or via Zoom. Students, staff and faculty are warmly welcomed to join. We enjoy each other’s company, play board games and appreciate time to wind down.

If you have any questions about Humanitea, please contact Professor Yvonne Widenor at widenory@canisius.edu or Ext. 2531.

Lunch Updates: An Event for Faculty

In November, Academic Affairs is hosting two lunch events for faculty. We will discuss some new resources for teaching, but mostly, this is an opportunity for faculty to come together for a meal on campus. We will provide lunch, but participants can bring their own as well.

Syllabus Refresh! New Resources for Syllabi Construction

Wednesday, November 2, 2022 at Noon, in the Old Main Faculty/Staff Lounge

Many faculty have been teaching tried-and-true courses for years, while others are developing new courses for next semester. In either case, it’s a good idea to visit the Inclusive Syllabus developed by faculty and staff as part of inclusive teaching faculty development over the past 2 ½ years. This syllabus is a template containing all relevant information above your course, department or discipline-specific content, to help students feel welcome in your class and succeed academically. You can copy any and all language from the syllabus, or use it as a template for building a new syllabus for your course. In this Lunch Update, Dr. Jenn Lodi-Smith describes the important features of this syllabus, and answers additional questions on syllabus construction and resources available to faculty and students.

Lunch Update: Easy Course Video

Tuesday, November 29, 2022 at Noon, in the Old Main Faculty/Staff Lounge

With Panopto, D2L now has a simple but effective toolset for recording and sharing video with (and between) students.  No more hassle with Google Drive or YouTube! In this Lunch Update, COLI staff will quickly demonstrate Panopto (it doesn’t take long!) and answer any questions about it and video for academics, generally.

Please RSVP for either or both events on our Faculty Development Event page!

Web Resources for Graduate Students

Whether face-to-face or online, graduate students at Canisius make extensive use of internet tools and services.  Come learn about the core information technologies you will use at Canisius.  Begin the semester confident in your use of Canisius Gmail, D2L, the MyCanisius Portal, and other tools for your success!

Each of these sessions covers the same content.  The on-campus session features a light dinner for all attendees.  The online sessions are via Zoom web conferencing.  Choose the session that is most convenient for you.
