Last Day of the Go Move Challenge

Today is the last day of the Go Move Challenge. Thank you to all who have been participating. Make sure to get all of your minutes in before midnight! If you would like to still add in your move minutes, and still have not registered, you can still do so today by clicking here (further details listed below).

Challenge Details:

Calling all faculty and staff at Canisius College to join other Jesuit institutions in the 10th annual Go Move Challenge by recording your minutes of intentional physical activity that gets the heart pumping to determine which Jesuit institution is the most active. The challenge runs from February 1 – February 28, so make sure to get registered so you can track your minutes right away.

The Go Move Challenge officially kicked off on February 1st for all faculty and staff, but it’s not too late to get registered and catch up on tracking any minutes of exercise you’ve had so far. Sign up today for a chance to win a $50 gift card to the Canisius Bookstore. If faculty and staff meet the goal of at least 600 minutes for the month of February with at least 150 minutes per week of intentional, heart-pumping exercise, their name will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win. According to the American Heart Association, it is recommended that you fit in at least 150 minutes of heart-pumping physical activity every week.

Other awards go to the university that tracks the most minutes, the university that averages the highest number of minutes per participant, and the university with the highest average number of minutes per region.

Midterms in D2L

With midterms coming up, it may be useful to review these features of D2L Quizzes and Dropboxes.

D2L Quizzes provides a robust tool to grade quizzes easier and quicker. Some features can help prevent cheating to a degree, like basic question randomization and advanced question randomization. If you want to use questions from a previous exam or quiz, the Question Library lets you copy questions to the mid-term. Connect your midterm exam directly to the grade book for faster grading. Click here for a tutorial. You can also have your students sign an Academic Integrity Pledge before continuing to the Midterm.

Please note that if you allow automatic grading of your exam, D2L will not automatically grade written responses. Those need to be graded manually. Inform your students that the grade they have immediately after completing the exam is not reflective of their overall grade. If you want to see all of the tutorials on the D2L Quiz tool that COLI has compiled, click here.

D2L Dropboxes are a great way to receive student work in various formats but more notably PDFs, Microsoft Office files, JPGs or PNGs. You can also restrict the types of files the dropbox will accept. Attach the dropbox to the grade book or use a D2L Rubric and attach it to the dropbox for faster grading.

For more information on D2L Dropboxes, click here. For tutorials on D2L Rubrics, click here. Or sign up for one of our many workshops here.

COLI has compiled other resources on the various toolsets in D2L. Click here to access those.

Imposter Syndrome:  The Fear of Being a Fraud

Presenter:  Annmarie Caño, PhD, Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, Gonzaga University

Imposter Syndrome is “loosely defined as doubting your abilities and feeling like a fraud.”  This fear of being found out is often experienced by people with identities that have been marginalized or excluded in higher education. To provide a re-frame, the experience of imposter syndrome is imposed on those who have dared to succeed in a system that was not designed for them.

With this lens, Dr. Caño will offer some personal experiences of being “imposter-ed” by others, including her initial reactions to these experiences and her approach to take a participant-observer stance about what these situations signal about the expectations of others or the environments in which she finds herself. Participants in this session will engage in discussion about what they can do to eliminate “impostering” behaviors so that we can better live our Jesuit mission to be “people for others.”

Please register for this webinar before March 10, here.
