Students in Dr. Reitsma SPA 324 class, Topics in Conversation: Latin America on the Move, had a special treat on Tuesday, September 21. Rev. Pete Neeley, SJ, from the Kino Border Initiative (KBI), along with Jaret Orenlas also from KBI, and Guadalupe Quiroz (who studies and teaches immigration issues in Puebla, Mexico) shared their perspectives on issues at the border, learning Spanish, doing good work, and cannonball moments of the St. Ignatius variety that transform our lives.
The conversation was in Spanish and the video is available in the Borders & Migrations Teaching Toolkit accessible here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Fx48J_BdMl8SrBGbsJuUHym3sUOSz96k?usp=sharing
KBI is a bi-national Jesuit organization based in Nogales Arizona/Sonora that provides accompaniment of migrants and deportees, and advocates for change along the border through education. Father Neeley was Canisius College’s commencement speaker for graduation in 2020, at which time he received an honorary degree..
