Canisius’ first-year students are learning just as much outside the classroom as they are inside. With assistance from the New Buffalo Institute, New Griff Orientation leaders took students on a walking tour of the Hamlin Park neighborhood. The tour included stops at the Lincoln Memorial Church, the Freedom Wall, the Metamorphosis #5 mural, the Buffalo Black Achievers Museum, and many more historical and notable sites.

Canisius College English Professor Mick Cochrane is featured in the August 30 (online) edition of The Buffalo News. The story, penned by Canisius alumnus Erik Brady ’76, focuses on how Cochrane expresses his love for baseball through his writing.

As you know, the ramp is closed while asbestos removal is taking place. The college plans to begin demolition in October with completion scheduled for early December. Work on the parking lot will resume in the spring when the weather improves, with completion slated for next summer.
With the loss of parking spaces in the ramp, a parking plan was developed for the fall and spring semesters that prioritizes the need for students and faculty to have access to parking closest to campus.
As promised, the college is closely examining parking patterns to keep abreast of any adjustments we can make to improve the parking situation. The below lots listed for faculty and staff include a few adjustments.
The lots are marked on campus and are identifiable on the campus map. As some adjustments are being made, please allow for some additional time as we update the signage.

We ask that A Permit holders do their best to utilize the lots assigned to them.

The original communication sent to faculty and staff on Monday, August 30, indicated “B” permit holders would have limited use of the Main-Humboldt parking lot. With the building just sold, the college has not been able to finalize these arrangements. Therefore, this area of parking has been removed as an option until it can be confirmed that the college will have use of it.
Thank you again for your patience and cooperation during the demolition. If anyone needs to register for parking, please log in to the MyCanisius portal and select Purchase Parking under the Campus Services tab.
By next summer, the surface lot will be finished providing a significant improvement over the ramp that contributes to the aesthetic of our historic neighborhood in Hamlin Park, is pedestrian-friendly, and significantly safer.

The ALANA Student Center invites the campus community to the 2nd Annual Student of Color Reception on Tuesday, September 7, from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. in the Bart Mitchell Quad.
This event is an opportunity for students of color across disciplines and class years to meet each other and begin to form relationships. Faculty, staff and administrators are encouraged to attend to meet both new and returning students.

As you may have recognized during New Griff Orientation, the theme that was promoted throughout all of the activities was “You Belong Here.” The ALANA Student Center is hoping to build off this theme by creating You Belong Here posters. Consistent with our Jesuit mission and our institutional efforts to create a more inclusive and welcoming community, these posters will help students visually see how important they are to us.
