Campus Candids

Nearly 60 members of the Canisius community participated in the college’s inaugural Juneteenth Celebration on Friday, June 18. The day of education, solidarity and service was held in honor of the African-American community. The commemoration began around 9:00 a.m. with opening remarks and an overview of the history of Juneteenth. Faculty, staff and students then divided into groups and dispersed into the neighboring community to participate in various clean-up efforts. Afterwards, participants regrouped on campus to hear stories surrounding the history of Juneteenth and the struggle for freedom and liberation from members of Tradition Keepers: Black Storytellers of WNY.

The commemoration marked the start of an important tradition at Canisius, to inspire conversation and action in the college’s ongoing work towards anti-racism, diversity, equity and inclusion.
