Preserve Our History

As the end of the academic year approaches, this is a reminder of the need to preserve all non-current records of departments, programs and administrative offices of Canisius College. The Rev. J. Clayton Murray, SJ, Archives at Bouwhuis Library is charged with preservation of the history of Canisius College. In order to do that, areas of the college must contribute documents, records and other materials that are covered by the College Retention Policy adopted May 08, 2012.

Before discarding documents no longer used, it is important to assess them for content of enduring significance. These are the records not needed for day-to-day administration of the office in which they originated that are of importance to the history of the college.

To discuss what materials are covered under this policy and to avoid loss of important records, please contact Kathleen De Laney, college achivist at 716-888-8421 or delaneyk@canisius.edu.

A list of materials appropriate for transfer to the Archives can be found here on the Library’s website.

Please note, the Archives do not serve as the official records management program for the college in terms of financial, legal or operating material pertaining to student accounts, personnel or employment information. Those records are maintained by other departments as part of their daily business.

Find other policies, guidelines and forms governing Archives collection, care and use here. The guidelines provide tips about preparing documents for transfer to the Archives, including proper labeling of boxes or files.

Please do not send materials to the Archives without first contacting Kathleen De Laney at Ext. 8421 or delaneyk@canisius.edu.

Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of HEOP

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the college’s participation in the Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program, Canisius will host a virtual event on Thursday, June 3. The event will take place on Zoom from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. Please RSVP by calling 716-888-2575 or Email Branwyn at wilkin14@canisius.edu. A Zoom link will be sent to you.

Canisius College was one of the first private institutions to receive funding from the New York State Education Department to support the creation of the Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP). HEOP is designed to support students who have the potential to be successful in college but due to academic and economic circumstances, would not be able to pursue a college education. The HEOP program became a model for access programs across the country and significantly increased the numbers of Black and Latinx students attending colleges and universities.

The celebration will recognize the first graduating class of 1973, which consisted of six students: George Benson, Amanda Cordero, Dorothy Cordelius, Michael Norwood, George Robinson and Dwight Tate. In addition, Canisius will honor HEOP graduates: George Robinson ’73, the Honorable Kevin Carter ‘86, Paula Prince ’91 and Aimiamia Amadasu-McCray ’03.

To date, there are more than 44,000 HEOP graduates across New York State including 400 graduates from Canisius College.

The event is sponsored by the Division of Academic Affairs, Canisius Opportunity Programs for Education (COPE), the Office of Diversity & Inclusion and the HEOP Student Organization.
