Wilma Abeles Iggers, professor emerita of modern languages, celebrated her 100th birthday this past Tuesday.
According to The Buffalo News Reporter’s Notebook, Iggers celebrated with the publication of a memoir, “A Vanished Way of Life: A Jewish Childhood in the Bohemian Countryside.” She and her family fled to Canada from Czechoslavakia in 1938 to escape the Nazis. Iggers was awarded the Gratias Agit Award by the Czech Foreign Ministry for her passionate writing about her homeland and promoting the Czech Republic.
