“The Unadulterated Message of Nonviolence: From Howard Thurman to Martin Luther King”

Historian Paul Harvey, PhD, will present a live webinar on Monday, March 22 at 7:00 p.m. Harvey is Distinguished Professor of History and Presidential Teacher Scholar at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs (UCCS).  Harvey researches, writes and teaches in the field of American history from the 16th century to present. 

Register here for the talk titled The Unadulterated Message of Nonviolence: From Howard Thurman to Martin Luther King, presented under the auspices of the college’s William H. Fitzpatrick Chair of Political Science Lecture Series. 

Harvey was named Distinguished Professor of History at UCCS in 2017. That same year, he was designated to give the Shriver Lectures in American History at Stetson University in Florida. Those lectures later were published as the book Southern Religion in the World: Three Stories. He was named a Presidential Teacher Scholar in 2009.

Harvey is the author/editor of 13 books and numerous articles, including Howard Thurman and the Disinherited: A Religious Biography (2020), Christianity and Race in the American South: A History (2016), and Bounds of Their Habitation: Religion and Race in American History (2016).

Nominations Being Accepted for Distinguished Faculty and Seniors

The Office of Alumni Engagement is accepting nominations for the annual Distinguished Faculty Award and the Distinguished Senior Awards.

The Distinguished Faculty Award recognizes an outstanding full-time faculty member of the college who is distinguished for contributions to the academic world and teaching excellence. One award is given per year. The Distinguished Faculty Award is presented at the Honors Convocation in May.

The Distinguished Senior Award is presented to seniors who have distinguished themselves through academic excellence and leadership roles at the college. Up to three awards may be given per year. The Distinguished Senior Awards are also presented at the Honors Convocation in May.

Borders and Migrations: Environment, Refugees and Risk

Join the Borders & Migrations Initiative on Monday, March 15 at 7:00 p.m. for a panel discussion featuring Pablo S. Bose, PhD, director or the Global and Regional Studies Program and Provost’s Faculty Fellow for General Education at the University of Vermont.

Bill Davis Scholarship

Each year, the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) Conference on Diversity and Equity (CDE) awards its Bill Davis Scholarship.  The scholarship is named in honor of the late director of the Upward Bound project at Loyola University of Chicago who was also a founding member of CDE.

This scholarship commemorates Davis’s commitment to education, public image and student of color motivation and is available to students who identify as African American, Latinx, Asian, Native American, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander. Please encourage qualified students to apply for this award.

The ALANA Student Center is hosting information sessions for students to learn more about the scholarship and to receive assistance in submitting the application. Free pizza and wings will be provided. The sessions will be held in the ALANA Student Center – FH-008.
