Go the Extra Mile on Giving Day!

_One_Canisius_revise-01.jpg

Want to go the extra mile on Canisius Giving Day? Consider a challenge for your program area. A good blue print to follow is from Jeff McConnell, PhD, chair of the Computer Science Department.

This year, in honor of his 38th year at Canisius, McConnell will donate $10 for every person who gives at least $38 to the Computer Science Program. In 2019, he matched gifts made to the program, dollar-for-dollar, up to $500. In 2018, he challenged that if 50 donors made a gift of $25 or more to the Computer Science Department, he would donate an additional $500.

Challenges are hugely successful in making alumni and supporters feel like their gifts are going the extra mile. A challenge for your support area could be an additional boost!

Remember that the programs with the most donors will receive a cash prize. The program with the most donors will receive $1,000. Second place will receive $750 and third place will receive $500.

Have questions about a challenge? Email the Canisius Fund at canfund@canisius.edu or call us at Ext. 2712 and we will be happy to assist you!

CEEP 2021-22 Applications Open

CEEP_Horizontal4-6.jpg

Students can now submit applications for the 2021-22 Canisius Earning Excellence Program (CEEP) awards through Monday, March 1.

CEEP facilitates student collaboration with faculty mentors or senior administrators through highly rewarding educational experiences. These intellectually demanding collaborations create exciting opportunities for applied learning and enhance faculty scholarship. Students gain readiness for a professional career or advanced graduate study when working closely with faculty on scholarly projects.

A 3.3 or higher GPA is required for all applicants. Last year, funding for CEEP transitioned to a scholarship model due to the impact of Covid-19. This funding method will continue for 2021-22 projects. Students will receive stipend payments deposited into their accounts with student records at the end of the semester. This allows students to receive federal work-study (if eligible) in addition to their CEEP project.

More information and current online applications are available on the Academic Affairs page on the myCanisius portal. Applications opened on Friday, February 12. Students will also receive an Email notification with details regarding the application process.

Please note, current CEEP award recipients interested in continuing their project next year will need to fill out new applications for the 2021-22 award. Renewal is not automatic.

If you have any questions regarding the award and application process, contact Emily McGorry (mcgorrye@canisius.edu) or Jenn Lodi-Smith (lodismij@canisius.edu).

Librarian Lisa Sullivan Featured in Buffalo Spree

On February 28, 2020 mixed-media artist Elizabeth Leader presented her new book, Discarded Ancestors, during the college’s Spring Archives Speaker Series event.

The book never would have happened without her curiosity and determination to finding out who had originally owned a photo album she discovered curbside on an East-side Buffalo street. It also would not have happened without the encouragement and research assistance of Canisius Librarian Lisa Sullivan.

Leader’s initial search included the creation of a haunting series of collages based on the neighborhood where she found the album. Out of those photos, she created art that brought new stories to life. It wasn’t until a chance meeting with a Sullivan, whose love of research, including genealogy, that the book came to life and a family was rediscovered.

The February 2021 edition of Buffalo Spree features Discarded Ancestors. It highlights Lisa Sullivan’s effort to help tell a personal story of Buffalo’s rich immigrant history, including the workplaces and urban landscapes filled with treasured legacies and secrets living among rubble.  Click here to read about it.
