Canisius in the News

Some things defy all odds. Such is the case for Canisius alumnus (Ret.) Lt. Col. James McNicholas ’68, MS ’97 who lost his college ring nearly 45 years ago while stationed in El Paso, TX. Despite a determined search, McNicholas’ ring never turned up. Until recently.

Reporter Sean Kirst shares the lost and found story in today’s edition of The Buffalo News. Click here to read the article.

In Memoriam: Michele Marable, PhD

I am saddened to report the passing of our dear friend and colleague Michele A. Marable, PhD, emerita professor of teacher education.  Michele died on Monday, September 28, at the age of 62.

Michele joined the ranks of our teacher education faculty in 1996 and retired from the college in 2017.  Countless graduates have benefited over the years from Michele’s commitment to helping improve the education and lives of children with disabilities. She helped to prepare many of the special education teachers in the Western New York area. Upon her retirement, alumni of the program expressed their thanks to Michele for her “strength and passion.”

Michele served as chair of the Teacher Education Department and as NCATE coordinator. As special education program director, Michele worked closely with adjunct faculty soliciting their crucial feedback on how well our program would prepare graduates for the field. An advocate for social justice and equity in our community, Michele created the Ignatian Scholars Program as part of an Oishei grant, which gave candidates an in-depth look at urban education.  She was a co-principal investigator for the JUSTICE (Justice for Underserved Students: Teaching in Inclusive Classroom Environments) Project, which in 2011 garnered Canisius a $1.5 million grant, the college’s largest grant at that time.

Michele was inducted into the Cradle Beach Legends Hall of Fame and was a long-time partner of Tapestry Charter School, serving as a board member.

Relatives and friends may visit the Lombardo Funeral Home (Snyder Chapel), 4614 Main Street, near Harlem Road, on Thursday, October 1, from 2-5 and 7-9 pm and Friday, October 2, from 4-7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, October 3, in St. Joseph University Heights Church, 3269 Main Street, at 10 am.

Requiescat in pace!

The Ohio State University Presents: “Unapologetic Research: Exploring Racism in Education Research”

The Ohio State University will present a three-part webinar series that examines not only conducting research centered on race but how to make research more just and equitable.

What does it mean to do strong anti-racist research from beginning to end?  This includes designing research questions, designing methods, connecting with participants and people in studies, and disseminating the findings.

The Unapologetic Research Series will address that arch of unapologetic research by hosting three Ohio State University alumni who have centered their careers on exploring issues of racism.

D-L Stewart, PhD, from Colorado State University, will present on Thursday, October 1 at 3:00 p.m.

Richard Milner, PhD, from Vanderbilt University, will present on Thursday, October 22 at 3:00 p.m.

April Peters-Hawkins, PhD, associate professor at the University of Houston, will present on Thursday, November 12 at 3:00 p.m.

Information and registration information can be found on the Ohio State University’s Office of Equity, Diversity, and Global Engagement website.

2020 United Way Campaign Updates

The United Way of Buffalo & Erie County has been working for the community for more than 100 years. In addition to providing funding to their partner organizations to help support the health, education and financial stability of every person in our community, they offer support that is accessible to all. During these challenging times, the United Way is assisting the community in various ways during the pandemic.

The Canisius College United Way Campaign for 2020 begins today and will wrap up on Friday, November 20.  This year, all campaign communications will be coming from Elizabeth Parkes, elizabeth.parkes@uwbec.org. This change was made so that United Way has a greater opportunity to educate not only about the work they do in our community but about services that are available to faculty, staff and students during this time.
