On Tuesday, August 18, President John J. Hurley informed the graduate and undergraduate students of the Class of 2020 that Canisius must, unfortunately, postpone the commencement events the college hoped to host on October 10, 2020.

While the state and region have made excellent progress in containing the spread of Covid-19, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has not yet loosened restrictions on the size of allowable gatherings, which is presently limited to 50 people. As such, it does not appear that it is feasible for Canisius to host the commencement ceremony as planned.

President Hurley assured graduates this is not a cancellation just another disappointing postponement.  Until Canisius is cleared by local health authorities, the college cannot safely bring graduates, their families and members of the campus community together again for this celebration.

“We look forward to a time next year when we can hold an appropriate and safe commencement ceremony,” said President Hurley. “I will announce information about the rescheduled date as soon as it is possible.”
