“Big Physics Question” Contest

The Physics Department would like to announce its “Big Physics Question” for the 2019-20 school year. The question is:

Women have made tremendous contributions to the advancement of physics. Consider the work of Marie Curie, Maria Goppert-Mayer, Chien-Shiung Wu, Jocelyn Bell Burnell, Emmy Noether and Vera Rubin. Yet as of 2019, only 20 percent of physics PhD’s in the U.S. are held by women.

QUESTION: How can we achieve an equal number of women as men pursuing physics degrees by 2040?

This is the third year the Physics Department has hosted the “Big Physics Question” essay contest. The contest is open to high school students in grades 9-12. It is an opportunity for bright young minds to offer their ideas to big questions.

The awards are as follows:

First Place: $750 Canisius College scholarship and $100 gift card

Second Place: $500 Canisius College scholarship

Third Place: $250 Canisius College scholarship

Online Teaching Workshop

The Center for Online Learning & Innovation (COLI) will host a workshop developed by Timothy Sawicki, PhD, associate professor of kinesiology, focused on online teaching. The workshop will take place on Wednesday, November 13 from 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. in Old Main 219.

Sawicki founded the online physical education master’s program in 2006 and has taught more than 125 online courses. He has conducted and published four research studies on his online teaching. The graduate physical education program was the first fully online program at Canisius College and grew to more than 160 master’s students.

This session offers tips for online teaching specifically related to what students like and dislike about taking online courses, written feedback considerations and teaching tips integrated into his courses from the experiences he has had. This session would be helpful to anyone currently teaching online or any instructor contemplating teaching online. The historical development of the physical education online program will be shown, followed the current research Sawicki has completed along with tips for teaching online. A Q & A period related to online teaching and best practices for online teaching will conclude the presentation. This session provides perspectives about teaching online from someone whose full college workload has been online for the past 12 years.

Refreshments will be served. The event is open to all Canisius faculty.
