This year’s topics include the Silk Road, archaeology in Turkey and the Vikings. We begin with Classics Tea@2, beginning this Friday, August 30 in our new reading room, Old Main 418. This weekly get-together is a relaxed atmosphere with various kinds of tea, pastries and conversation. Those looking to de-stress after a week of studies are invited to attend.

Online Faculty Development Course

The Center for Online Learning & Innovation (COLI) offers a five-week mini-course for Canisius College faculty that prepares professors to teach online and hybrid courses.  This course provides many practical tips for teaching online, but more importantly, helps faculty explore new pedagogies for active learning, social presence, and community building in courses on the internet.  The core of COLI’s approach to online teaching and learning is that the professor is the single most important element in successful student learning. The Online Faculty Development Course (OFDC) helps professors achieve a strong teaching presence within their online and hybrid courses.  The OFDC also simulates a quality online course, so participating faculty get a sense of what it’s like to be an online student.

All Canisius College faculty are eligible to participate in the OFDC.  Whether you plan to teach an online or hybrid course in the future, aren’t yet sure you’ll teach online, or would just like to know more about online courses and coursework, this is an excellent opportunity.  Check the COLI website, at canisius.edu/coli, to see when the next OFDC is happening.  Then enroll by contacting coli@canisius.edu.

Campus Candids

Petey gave out lots of hugs and high-fives at last Thursday’s President’s Welcome and Blessing.

The Koessler Center was packed with members of the Class of 2023, their parents and Canisius faculty and staff on Thursday, August 22 for the President’s Welcome and Blessing. Vice President for Student Affairs Daniel Dentino, PhD, and President John Hurley welcomed the newest members of the Canisius family, and President Hurley offered some advice to students on how to best take advantage of their Canisius education. He also told parents that if their children take his advice, they will be significantly transformed in four years. Mike Hayes, director of campus ministry, offered a blessing, during which all students held up flameless candles.

Sara Morris, PhD, interim vice president for academic affairs, read the college’s Academic Promise and Abby Hughes from the Undergraduate Student Association invited students to recite the Student’s Pledge.  The event closed with the singing of the Alma Mater.

President John Hurley offers new students some words of wisdom.
