The physical and health education/teacher education program (PHETE) hosted the annual conference for the Western Zone of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AHPERD) on Tuesday, March 12 at the Koessler Athletic Center.
With record attendance of more than 180 physical and health educators from the Western New York area, this marks the eighth year that the Canisius P/HETE program hosted the conference. Teacher candidates from the P/HETE program also presented two workshops entitled “Using Social Media in PE” and “SWAT Ball.” Other presenters included the First Tee of Western New York, U.S. Games, United State Tennis Association, a Project Play WNY, and many other local health and physical education professionals.
Associate Professor of Kinesiology Greg Reeds, EdD, also presented a session entitled “Teacher, Parent Coach: Common Techniques Used by Teachers, Parents and Coaches” while colleagues Clancy Seymour, EdD, assistant professor/director of P/HETE, and Eileen Abbatoy, associate director of the Griff Center, co-presented their own workshop called “Successful Interviewing & Earning Job Offers.”
The keynote address, “Life is Short, Live it Well,” was delivered by Curt Hinson, PhD, an adjunct faculty member in the online physical education program here at Canisius College.
A special thanks to Greg Reeds, Jane Pope, administrative associate for kinesiology, Tim Seil, assistant director of athletic facilities, Pat Clarke, director of athletic facilities; Andy Bishop, a kinesiology graduate assistant, Jeff Koch, a teacher candidate and mascot, and the many P/HETE majors on hand for their efforts to make this conference the most successful ever.
