P/HETE Majors Assess Childhood Fitness

The Canisius Physical and Health Education/Teacher Education (P/HETE) program hosted students from Stanley Makowski Buffalo Public School No. 99 on Tuesday, March 5 at the Koessler Athletic Center.

Alongside the assistance of Kristin Finn, PhD, professor of teacher education, and her students in HSV 303: Research Methods in the Social Sciences, P/HETE majors from Assistant Professor of Kinesiology Clancy Seymour’s PED 371/571: Assessment in Physical Education class collaborated with Tony Lafornara ᾽88 and Ashley Caputa MS ’07, MS ’10 to assess fourth grade student fitness levels using several different methods.

With more than 140 students in attendance, the experience was enjoyable for the fourth graders and allowed teacher education programs to conduct research while cultivating local BPS partnerships. In addition, teacher candidates are provided the opportunity to analyze pre- and post-test data and conduct fitness assessments in an authentic environment.

Important Registration Change for Summer and Fall!

Effective for the summer and fall 2019 registration period, students will begin using their new “Student Profile” to view grades, view their advisor contact information, look up classes, prepare registration plans (ahead of their registration date) and register for classes. The “Student Profile” provides students with a user and mobile friendly view of the biographical and academic information that is on their student record. This information is fed directly from Banner in the same way as it is for iAdvise.

Student Records will continue to support the previous registration process for this registration cycle only, but encourage students and advisors to familiarize themselves with the new process prior to the start of registration. Training documentation can be found by clicking on the “Learn about Student Profile” icon located under the “MyCampus” heading on the right-hand side of the “MyCanisius” portal. Registration dates are available on the academic calendar or in the advisement guide, which is located on the portal under the Schedule and Registration Heading.

Please note that Student Records will be rolling out an “Advisor Profile” later in the year as part of the Degreeworks degree audit implementation. In the “Advisor Profile”, advisors will be able to view advisee student profiles and registration plans that they have created in their Student Profiles.

By building registration plans ahead of time, students are able to discuss them with their advisor, and registering from a plan is much quicker than our current process! In addition, students can create multiple plans in order to have backup options quickly available to them.

If you have questions regarding the “Student Profile” or the new registration process, contact the Student Records and Financial Services Center at Ext. 2990, studentservices@canisius.edu or at the office located in Bagen Hall Room 106 between 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. daily (7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. on registration Tuesdays).

Digital Humanities Workshop: Library Resources

The Andrew L. Bouwhuis Library and the Digital Humanities Group at Canisius College are teaming up to offer a special workshop on Tuesday, March 12 at 3:30 p.m. in the Library Resource Center Classroom. Pat Coward, PhD, library assessment and instruction coordinator, will lead the presentation. The workshop is designed for faculty focused on library resources for courses and student research.

It is the primary mission of academic libraries to stay current and offer as many up-to-date resources for faculty and students as time and budgets allow. The library frequently purchases new books and subscribes to new databases and other resources to help students and faculty conduct academic research. It’s hard to keep up with the changes, so this workshop will explore some of the newer offerings of the library. This interactive and hands-on workshop will demonstrate a variety of recently acquired resources that can be used to help students complete assignments with quality sources of information and some that can be used by instructors in the classroom.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to identify new services and resources available to students, as well as understand how to access and navigate them. Light refreshments will be served.
