UP-STAT 2018 Statistics Conference at University of Rochester

Faculty, staff and students encouraged to attend

The University of Rochester will host this year’s Joint Conference of the Upstate Chapters of the American Statistical Association (UPSTAT-2018). This conference is April 20 and 21 and brings together faculty and students from several upstate universities to focus on statistical practice, data science and education.

Given the proximity of the U of R, Canisius faculty, staff and graduate students should take the opportunity to attend, network, and consider presenting.

The theme of this year’s conference is “Better Living Through Statistics.” The theme is a reflection of the diverse ways data and statistics permeate our every-day life. In addition to contributed presentations, the conference will have a renowned keynote speaker, tutorials, a data competition, poster sessions and a panel discussion. Refer to the web site here for details.

Note that the conference is on the weekend following Ignatian Scholarship Day on April 18. This is an excellent opportunity for Canisius students to present their work to a wider audience and have it published in the conference proceedings. This year’s speaker is Bhramar Mukherjee, PhD, from the University of Michigan School of Public Health, Biostatistics Department. Her presentations include:

  • Revisiting the Genome-wide Threshold, Friday, April 20 from 4:00 ‒ 5:30 p.m.
  • How Big Data Can Leverage Small Data and Conversely on Saturday, April 21 from 4:45 ‒ 5:55 p.m.

The deadline for abstracts is Friday, March 16. This can likely be extended if more time is needed. Details about the conference, including submission of abstracts or posters, can be found here.
