Canisius in the News

President John Hurley is among private college presidents speaking out against Governor Cuomo’s proposal to eliminate $30 million from the Bundy Aid Program, which is used to provide financial aid to students.  See the link below to the article titled College leaders raise alarm of Cuomo’s ‘major assault on higher education,’  which ran in today’s edition of The Buffalo News.

Serious Games Meetup

Explore virtual reality

Join us for our first Serious Games Meetup of 2018 on Friday, February 2 at 11 a.m. in the digital media arts lounge on the third floor of Lyons Hall.  We’ll look at some virtual reality simulations and try out Dr. Jonathan Lawrence’s Creation Game, which he and his students played last semester in class.

Serious Games can serve a wide variety of purposes: educational, scientific simulation, healthcare, therapy, personnel training, emergency management, city planning and politics.  The Serious Games Meetup is sponsored by the Digital Humanities Group.  Here, faculty, staff and students explore learning theories and game design, and conduct workshops where participants explore digital and analog game use and creation.  And yes, they play some games, too!

Faculty Meetups

Reading, writing and academic integrity

This spring, the Center for Online Learning & Innovation (COLI) hosts two faculty meetups focused on the pedagogy of reading, writing and academic integrity.

They are on Friday, February 16, 12:00 – 1:30 p.m. and Thursday, March 22 from 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. in the library learning center.

Now more than ever, college faculty are under pressure to cultivate critical reading and writing skills in students.  But in their worlds, courses, lessons and assignments compete with a wide variety of other priorities and media. We often struggle to persuade our students that these intellectual virtues are worth their time.  Our most heartbreaking and frustrating experiences come when we discover that they commit academic dishonesty rather than make a sincere attempt to create original work.

This meetup will not be a formal presentation. Instead, faculty should come and share experiences and concerns as colleagues.  Moreover, each participant is encouraged to share triumphs, however small or tentative.  For example, when did you do or discover something that fostered reading and writing skills among your students?  What can you share with your colleagues across campus that might help them in their classrooms and disciplines?

All faculty are welcome and COLI supplies the refreshments.

Together, we can do much more!

Celebration of Life Held for Robert Wilmers

President John Hurley and a select number of community leaders including Jeremy Jacobs, Howard Zemsky, Robert Gioia, Sen. Charles Schumer and U.S. Rep. Brian Higgins were featured in a touching video tribute to the late M&T Bank CEO Robert Wilmers, whose memory and contributions to the community were celebrated earlier this week at Kleinhans Music Hall.

Nearly 1,500 people attended the memorial service that celebrated Wilmers’ life and highlighted the tremendous difference he made in Western New York since becoming M&T’s largest shareholder in the early 1980s. Wilmers, who passed away unexpectedly in December, was a generous donor to Canisius and a good friend of the college. Canisius bestowed an honorary degree upon Wilmers in 1988, and the college’s Board of Regents named him a Distinguished Citizen in 1996.
