In accordance with the college’s policies concerning course content, Information Technology Services maintains course content in Desire2learn (D2L) for five years. After a previous course section passes the five year mark, its course space and contents are deleted from D2L. On February 16, all course content in Desire2Learn from the 2012 year (spring, summer and fall) will be deleted.
The Center for Online Learning & Innovation recommends that all instructors follow the guidelines on the Start/End Course Checklist to save a copy of your course and a copy of your gradebook. This should be done at the end of each semester. Some other important guidelines for course content are:
- Graded materials (papers, exams, finals) that are not returned to students must be retained on campus for one year after the date grades are due.
- Canisius policy requires that adjunct faculty members provide a copy of their gradebooks to the department chair or program director affiliated with the course they are teaching. If you use D2L for your grades, we keep the courses for that five-year period to meet this requirement. If you do not use D2L, please make sure that you provide a copy (either electronic or hard copy) to the department chair or program director (or administrative associate).
We recommend Google Drive as a cloud storage option to save digital copies of old course content.

Annual Play4Kay Game is Thursday Night
Participate in free throw challenge to raise money for those battling cancer
Your Canisius women’s basketball team’s annual Play4Kay game is scheduled for Thursday, February 1 when the Griffs host Niagara at 7 p.m. in the Koessler Athletic Center (KAC). Kay Yow was the Hall of Fame basketball coach who became an inspiring figure when she continued to coach the North Carolina State women’s team during a long battle with breast cancer. She died in 2009. Fans can participate in the Play4Kay National Free Throw Challenge to raise money to extend and help improve the lives of those battling cancer.
All tickets are $5.00. The first 300 Canisius fans to enter the KAC that night will receive a pink Golden Griffin t-shirt. There will also be plenty of complimentary hot chocolate, coffee and Timbits for all fans while supplies last.

Serious Games Meetup
Group explores virtual reality
Join us for our first Serious Games Meetup of 2018 on Friday, February 2 at 11 a.m. in the digital media arts lounge on the third floor of Lyons Hall. We’ll look at some virtual reality simulations and try out Dr. Jonathan Lawrence’s Creation Game, which he and his students played last semester in class.
Serious Games can serve a wide variety of purposes: educational, scientific simulation, healthcare, therapy, personnel training, emergency management, city planning and politics. The Serious Games Meetup is sponsored by the Digital Humanities Group. Here, faculty, staff and students explore learning theories and game design, and conduct workshops where participants explore digital and analog game use and creation. And yes, they play some games, too!

Hockey Battles Holy Cross for First Place This Weekend
Saturday is free New Era cap night
There is a huge hockey series coming up this weekend as your Golden Griffins host Holy Cross on Friday, February 2 and Saturday, February 3. The Griffs and Crusaders are tied atop Atlantic Hockey with 26 points, while Mercyhurst, undefeated in their past seven games, has catapulted into third just two points out of first.
Friday’s game at HARBORCENTER faces off at 7:35 p.m., while Saturday’s matinee begins at 4:35 p.m. Friday is Scout Night, while Saturday afternoon features a complimentary open skate after the game, plus free New Era Golden Griffin hockey caps for the first 250 fans.

East Side Immersion Examined on “Crossroads”’
Havis and Mosko discuss the origins and latest initiatives involving the Ignatian seminar
Tune into “Crossroads” this Sunday, February 4, when Psychology Professors Devonya Havis, PhD and Melissa Mosko, PhD, join the program to discuss the origins and latest initiatives involving Canisius’ East Side Immersion.
Hosted on the first Sunday of every month by Rev. Patrick J. Lynch, SJ, “Crossroads” is a radio program produced by the Network of Religious Communities. It airs at 6:00 a.m. on MIX-96 (96.1 FM) and at 6:30 a.m. on JACK-FM (92.9).
The Ignatian seminar, hosted each spring, familiarizes students with the diverse cultural, political, economic and religious environments that characterize the East Side of Buffalo. Students visit churches, schools, cultural and civic organizations, and meet with local politicians, law enforcement and community leaders who represent the city’s East Side.
