Handzlik Named Director of the Canisius Fund

handzlik-summer-photoFollowing a search process, I am pleased to announce that Summer Handzlik has been appointed Director of the Canisius Fund effective August 21, 2017. Summer will be responsible for the overall strategic planning, implementation and evaluation of annual fundraising initiatives at the college.

Summer graduated from Medaille College with a bachelor’s degree in communication, and later with a master’s degree in business administration. Prior to accepting the director’s position, she served as the assistant director of the Canisius Fund for nearly three years. Additionally, Summer served as the director of alumni relations and the director of the Medaille Annual Fund. Summer brings experience and a proven track record of success in her field, which will be invaluable in meeting the departmental goals and objectives.

I am confident that Summer will be an excellent match for this position, and continue to be a strong asset to the Canisius Fund Department. Summer will be located in Lyons Hall, Room 206C, and can be reached at extension 2965 or at handzlis@canisius.edu.

Please join me in congratulating Summer on her new position!

EVENTS

Men’s Soccer Kicks Off Bonfire Celebration

Join the festivities in the Quad after the game

Your Golden Griffin men’s soccer team kicks off the home portion of its schedule Thursday, August 31 with a 4:30 p.m. contest against Robert Morris. Following the game, the college will celebrate an annual tradition with the Bonfire slated to be lit at approximately 8:30 p.m. in the Quad.

The game will highlight the first ever appearance at a soccer contest by the Golden Griffin pep band. In addition, students can register to win a 40″ TV via the Blue Gold Win App and three students will be selected to participate at halftime in the Demske 100 – an adult tricycle race featuring three souped-up bikes.

Bonfire activities are open to everyone. On the menu are s’mores and Anderson’s Ice Cream, plus a t-shirt exchange for anyone bringing a purple item to the party. Several students will participate in the “burning of the purple” as torch-bearers, and plenty of music will add to the festivities. It all starts around 7 p.m.

Serious Games Meet-up September 8

Dr. Leah MacVie shows how she incorporates games into her classroom

On Friday, September 8 at 11:00 a.m., Serious Games Meetup Group convenes its first meetup of the Fall 2017 semester.  Leah MacVie, PhD, will show us games she has employed in her classroom, and the ways she has encouraged future teachers to think about gaming as part of pedagogy.  Games needn’t be complicated, tech-heavy, and big-budget activities – Professor MacVie and her students play and create “analog” paper and card games that enable learners to experience concepts as processes and activities.

Serious Games can serve a wide variety of purposes: educational, scientific simulation, healthcare and therapy, personnel training, emergency management, city planning, and politics.  The Serious Games Meetup Group explores learning theories and game design, and conducts workshops for faculty, staff, and students that explore digital and analog game use and creation.  And yes, we play some games, too!  All students, faculty, staff, and alumni are welcome at our meetups.

The group, facilitated by P.J. Moskal, PhD, associate professor of Digital Media Arts, and Mark Gallimore, PhD, instructional designer in the Center for Online Learning & Innovation (COLI), will meet on the first Friday of the month for one-hour sessions.

Human Resources Sponsors Yoga Classes at Canisius

Reduce stress as you stretch and breathe

Are you looking for a way to incorporate activity, mindfulness and stress reduction into your workday? Look no further because the Human Resources Department is sponsoring a yoga class during the fall 2017 semester! All faculty and staff are invited to attend the class for an hour of relaxing, restorative Hatha Yoga. Classes will run for eight weeks and begin on Tuesday, September 19. Mats will be provided for the class but make sure to wear comfortable clothing. Together, the class will enjoy the gentle, restorative gifts of Hatha Yoga as they stretch, breathe, create space within, release tension, and relax.

All classes will held on Tuesdays from 5:00 ‒ 6:00 pm for the following dates and locations.
