Spotlight on Teaching and Learning

itl-bio366-spotlightFaculty members often seek new ways to engage students with course material. Kristen Covino, PhD, postdoctoral teaching fellow in the Biology Department, recently challenged her ornithology students to put their knowledge of birds to the test.

Students examined the biology of a real bird and created two fake birds. Classmates were then asked to vote on which of the birds was real. Demonstrating that truth is often stranger than fiction, most students did not correctly identify the real bird, often because behaviors or characteristics of the real birds seemed unlikely.

The second event in the Canisius College of Arts & Sciences Digital Humanities Speaker Series is today, April 27, at 4:00 p.m. in Lyons Hall, Room 418.

PJ Moskal, PhD, associate professor and director of digital media arts (DMA), will present on emerging trends in virtual reality (VR) and showcase some of his recent artwork in this sphere. A new wave of enthusiasm about virtual reality (VR) poses interesting artistic challenges and opportunities for the creation of digital art. Immersion, a key component of a VR experience, plays an important role in the perception of art and in the emotional involvement of a viewer. Moskal will also examine traditions of immersion through the lens of the intertwined worlds of art, science and technology.

Moskal teaches courses in interaction design, game development and animation as part of the game design concentration in the DMA program.
