UPSTAT-2017 Conference Returns to Canisius

Canisius is once again the proud host of the Joint Conference of the Upstate Chapters of the American Statistical Association (UPSTAT-2017) on April 21 and 22. The conference will bring together faculty and students from several upstate New York universities to focus on statistical practice and education.

The theme of this year’s conference is “Data Science, Statistics and the Environment.”  The scope of environmental topics is quite broad: it includes energy, sustainability and criminal justice.  In addition to contributed presentations, the conference will have tutorials, a data competition, poster sessions and a panel discussion, as well as dinner on April 21.

The event’s keynote speaker is Robert Bell, PhD, statistician in research and machine intelligence at Google. Bell will be presenting on both days of the conference. Friday’s presentation will be followed by a panel discussion, on “Statistics and the Environment” with representatives from both industry and academia.

Canisius students are strongly encouraged to present a paper or poster at this conference.  This is a great opportunity to showcase scholarship occurring on campus.  Any thesis, project or Ignatian Day presentation with a bit of statistical analysis and tied to the environment in the broadest sense would be a candidate.  Fees for registration and the Friday night banquet will be waived for student presenters.  The deadline for abstracts is Friday, March 17.
