First Battle of the Bridge Contest is Wednesday

The first Battle of the Bridge contest for the 2016-17 season is slated for Wednesday, September 28 when your Canisius women’s soccer team hosts Niagara at the Demske Sports Complex. Kick off for the Canal Cup is slated for 7 p.m. The game will be shown live on espn3. Canisius has won the Cup the past six consecutive seasons.

It’s also Hawaiian Night – fans are encouraged to wear their favorite island gear. #TinyBubbles

Racial Liberation: An Ignatian Way

Anti-racism and Jesuit spirituality will be the topic of discussion on Tuesday, October 11 when Alex Mikulich, PhD, visits campus. Mikulich’s lecture, entitled “Racial Liberation: An Ignatian Way,” will take place at 7:30 p.m. Grupp Fireside Lounge, located on the second floor of the Student Center.

Mikulich is an anti-racist Roman Catholic social ethicist, activist and scholar at Loyola University – New Orleans, where he is also assistant director of mission and ministry and spiritual director in the tradition of Saint Ignatius of Loyola.

His recent essay, entitled “Breathing Space,” was published in America magazine and argued that “Jesuit institutions must do more to undo racism.” The essay won the 2016 Best Essay in a National Weekly from the Catholic Press Association.

Mikulich’s visit is co-sponsored by the Catholic Studies Program and the Joseph J. Naples Conversations in Christ and Culture Lecture Series. The event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow.

Help Ensure Consistent Purchasing Practices

The purpose of the Procurement Policy is to ensure consistent purchasing practices across the college while preserving organizational and financial accountability. This policy applies to anyone spending Canisius College funds, including faculty, administrators, staff and students. Canisius funds include grants, agency funds and other sources, which are all under our financial reporting.

Here are important points to keep in mind:

A purchase order is required prior to ordering goods and services with a value of $1,000 or greater.

A valid purchase order number must appear on the vendor’s invoice.

To obtain a purchase order, create a purchase requisition in BANNER. A purchase requisition must be approved at the appropriate level in the spending approval hierarchy before it is converted to a purchase order.

VISA purchasing cards are used for purchasing goods or services with a value of less than $1,000 and travel related expenses.

Learn Something New

On October 11, the Center for Online Learning & Innovation will host #CanisiusCreateDay, a day set aside for learning something new.

This event will take place on the 4th floor of Old Main, where each classroom will be dedicated to one of three buckets: technology in teaching and learning, online learning, and innovation.

The day is open to everyone on campus (faculty, staff and students). So come learn something new!

Homecoming 2016 is a Success!

Homecoming 2016: Always a Griffin is now a treasured memory for the Canisius alumni, family and friends who returned to alma mater to participate in the weekend’s activities.

A highlight of this year’s weekend included the formal dedication of the new Griffin statue outside of Science Hall. The campus community gathered to celebrate its majestic mascot as the 1,500-pound Griffin sculpture now permanently and prominently nests on the Canisius campus.

The king of birds and beasts, the Griffin trekked more than 1,200 miles from its creator, sculptor Mark Palmerton, owner of the Crucible Foundry in Norman, OK.

The Griffin sculpture is a gift from the Undergraduate Student Association and will serve as a permanent symbol of Canisius pride for generations of students and alumni.

Hundreds of alumni posed with the Griffin during Homecoming Weekend, including college student personnel administration (CSPA) alums who celebrated the 20^th anniversary of the master’s program. Alumni from the CSPA Classes of 1998 through 2016 returned to Canisius to celebrate the anniversary. Some traveled from as far away as California, the Carolinas and Massachusetts.

Additional weekend activities included the Favorite Professors Event as alumni and faculty gathered to catch up and reminisce. The always crowd-pleasing Tent Party received rave reviews from those in attendance. Events also included the Distinguished Alumni Dinner, Fall Fest, Griffs’ athletic events, Java with the Jesuits and the Homecoming Mass for alumni, family, students, parents and friends.
