Kozik M 1Mariusz Kozik, PhD, dedicates himself in so many ways to the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department at Canisius. He sets a high standard for his colleagues as he excells in so many areas. As a teacher, he fearlessly adopts new pedagogies into his classes and shows an extraordinary commitment to teaching chemistry not only in the classroom but also through his research activities.

Serving as a research mentor to more than 30 students, Mariusz has co-authored several papers with his students, which have appeared in prestigious peer-reviewed publications. He is also successful in obtaining funding for his research with awards from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, Research Corporation and other major funding organizations. Indeed his research program is a rare and admirable example of how a dedicated and talented faculty member can produce top-quality scientific research involving undergraduate students.

Mariusz is also a remarkably effective and popular chair of the department for three terms as well as a member of a myriad of college committees. For 20 years, Mariusz has organized the WNY Chemistry Olympiad activities and competition that provide entry for high school students into the International Chemistry Olympiad competition.

Did you know…that Mariusz’s expertise in European football (so-called soccer here in the U.S.) beats his expertise in general chemistry? He knows much more about football teams in the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, France Ligue 1, Bundesliga and Ekstraklasa than most faculty at Canisius know about the NFL, MLB, NHL and NBA! While in high school, his daughter Isabelle played varsity soccer at Sacred Heart Academy in Buffalo and competed in a travel soccer league for the Amherst Lightning.
